Setting odometer back to Zero

I picked up a new cluster with a tach in it for my brown trucks restification, and I would like to reset the odometer to 00000. So I can keep track of my rebuilt engine's actual mileage. The title states that mileage is void, so its not like its illegal to do. Does anyone know how to do it? I've heard plug a drill or dremel into it and just spin it over until it rolls over to zero?

you will have to take the speedo apart and roll the numbers back individually i think, not all of them will spin backwards. i have also heard running in reverse jacked up but i don't know for sure.

The easist way is to pull it all apart and do it by hand. Hooking a drill up to it works but takes FOREVER!!!

I know this by experience, lol

Ok, well how do ya get it apart? I have my speedometer out right now and it looks impossible to take it apart.

just start pullin screws out. It will come apart. Just remember where they came from.

How the heck is one supposed to remove the pointer??? I've pulled on it and pulled on it and it wont separate anywhere. I thought they were supposed to just press onto the end of the shaft?

Removing speedo pointer

This is a very risky task. Even the speedo guys destroy the balance. The pointer is either pressed or glued on shaft. Get small soldering gun and heat carefully very near the pointer. The press should release pointer. The glue may also release the pointer. I did this a few time about 30 years ago. Use a hemostat to move pointer from shaft. Also support shaft. If the shaft or balance wheel breaks, different speedo time. Milage can be changed by moving each number carefully. Be sure to make note of starting numbers. Good luck Use care. Frank

Yea, after close examination of the mechanism I concluded that the easiest way of resetting the odometer was to press out the pin that holds the small locking gears in place. After carefully removing that pin and taking each locking gear off of the pin as I slid it out of its slot, the dials all turn freely. The most intensive part of the process is putting each locking gear back into place as you slide the pin back in.

Yea, I tried removing the pointer one last time before looking things over more closely and figuring out this other method, and while pulling on it that last time I could feel and hear a tiny click, so I said enough with that. I dont want to ruin this speedometer.
As far as I can tell, that click did nothing to the speedo, it still works and acts like it moves the same.

Write down the mileage when you installed the new engine or whatever, it's legal and quite easy. Then you can look at the mileage when installed and know the mileage on new parts. I can't see doing something that is looked at as criminal just to know when things are installed.
