sea foam at oil change

About to change the oil on this 94 7.3 idi turbo. It iwll be my first time and i have NO history on prior maintenance.

should i add a can of sea foam to it and warm it up and try to lossen all the potential junk out ?

I tried to search this but didnt see anything come up.

There are several trains of thought.
I dought it can hurt, doing a short interval flush , the auto rx thread may be of intrest to ya, the atf trick,
Hit the stickies and search the tech area also.

Stickies are permanent threads at the top of this and other forums. They are "Stick-ied" in place because they are very useful.
There you can find the FAQs and other good stuff. There is also the read only tech info sub forum you will find one level up. I wish I could answer your other questions, but I'm new here as well...

Atf has for decades been used as a solvent/cleaner ...
In motor oil it cleans lifters and such.

Search auto rx in the main forum page.
I think diesel purge? Ip cleaning system.

Its an additive used to free up old stubbron diesels and gassers.
If you have a problem its been hashed out here somewhere.

One thing these trucks seem to like is getting hot and sweaty after a long rest, if its( to the op) been sitting fresh fuel and work it hard( load it down / tow heavy) the p o of my 88 drove it 15 min's once a week to get the kids down the block.
Ran like chitt till I daily drove it and atarted towing gravel home.

I've had seafoam plug fuel filters, and realease a ton of sludge into oil pans/filters. It works i just wouldnt run it long.

We used to dump out a qt of oil and replace with atf b-4 an oil cg.
4-5 gt auto's

Here's an oldie from air cooled vw days....
Valve train cleaner
DON'T DO THIS TODAY
Take a qt bottle mix 50-50 diesel an h20 mix like hell
Rev eng drizzel into intake ( think about hydrolocking tour eng here)
WAIT FOR THE CLOUD to form and keep going till the bottle is empty, keep it revved up till all steam is gone ,,, keep it running drive it like ya stole it for a half an hr.
This got my junk to idle smoothly .

Seems that stuff did work!
Not to dawg ya but what was in the filter( fuel) before the seafoam?
Us old guys would do these things fight before a service interval so as to be ready to have to change out the filters.

In grandpa's days oil had no or very low detergents. Atf had more than oil and adding atf to oil did some cleaning. Today's oils are high detergent. Much more than atf has so adding atf today just thins the oil out a little

My high school auto shop teacher suggested a similar procedure on a g@$$er that has carboned-up cylinders, except using pure water and a spray bottle. The idea is the particles of cold water are supposed to shock the carbon bits into breaking off the piston tops. Tried it on my '65 Chevelle that I had in HS and didn't really have any luck (that poor car was cherry, but the engine was a basket case).

However, due to hydrolock issues along with the possibility of causing a runaway if you tried it with fuel or oil mixed in, I would NEVER do this on a diesel. Besides, with the way the diesel combustion process works, I don't think you'll really get any carbon buildup in the cylinders like you can with a g@$$er that's been babied too much...

Dump yer old oil out and filter...add new oil and 1 can of seafoam to oil system...do 3000 m dump oil n filter.

Auto RX and seafoam can be used in similar manner.

Now for those with HI DETERGENT ATF....show me where? ATF IS A HYDRAULIC fluid and does not support combustion by products like detergent engine oi doesl....I just dont see the ATF as a solvent.
