okay, so i ordered a kit on ebay before i knew about the forum guys that offer better parts. so im wondering... the leak is from the hoses, instead of tearing everything down, could i just reuse the caps that are there and replace the hoses? the hoses are whats leaking on mine, or am i inviting disaster by not doing the whole job? ive read of some guys using the ebay kits and having fitment trouble from the caps, i figured replacing the hoses should take care of my leak, looking to keep it simple.

Well, the issue is are you ok with doing this job twice... If so then try replacing the hose first. If it continues leaking then you at least tried. And now you know where the good parts are available from. Not sure what ebay seller you bought from but hope for the best and expect the worst is how to look at this job. Asking this forum before you spend money will get you the best buy for the money. I personally hate doing the same job twice because I thought I had the right quality parts the first time. Its an honest learning experience for most of us. Theres no shame in not knowing where the good stuff is. The shame comes from knowing but buying and having issues. then posting the issues here. Thats the person that should be walking in my feelings. This forum very seldom has those kinds come along. They don't hang around too long. A few years back a member came here with an issue. He just installed a new Banks wastegated turbo and could not remove the pipe plug to get clean oil to feed the turbo. so he ran dirty oil off the oil cooler to feed the turbo. Drove from Nevada to the east coast. We were tracking him by his gps he supplied to us. We could even see his truck in the satellite views. Well he lost boost in a bad place of Arizona. We never did see him come back to the forum... Sad ending for a nice engine and turbo too.

There are two sizes of return hose, one is 1/4" the other is 3/16", the barbs on the caps have match. The best clamps are the spring type with little ears you have to squeeze to put them on, the gear type clamp distorts the hose and more than likely cause leaks. If the hose is too long they will leak also, hose length should be no more than 4-1/4". The spring clamps are color coded, green for 3/16" and red for 1/4". Make sure you lube the orings with Vasoline or the like with a lite coating and make sure the caps SNAP down all the way.
You haven't indicated what year and engine you have, 6.9L have the 3/16", the 7.3 have the 1/4" hoses.

everything ive read says to use the old ones for templates.

yep, chris142... post 4 said no more than 4 1/4" length.

If you don't believe it, put all the caps on, put a straightedge ruler across 'em, and measure. You want the lines to be just the right length.

Whatever you do, use the right style of clamps. You can get more of them at any auto parts store.

Wel l are the lines off to one side of the caps or are they in the center of the caps. This makes a big difference. Any size cap will fit on any idi engine be it 6.9 or 7.3. Remember your matching what you already have on the engine. Also remember the injectors fit any idi engine too. My engine came with the smaller hose and the lines fit between the caps in the center. I have changed that to the larger offset style caps.

I'll tell you how to fix that tho. Take the long hose, cut off a 1/16" then glue that piece to the short hose, keep doing that until they fit just right. That should do it.
