Gears are touchy, if you haven't wrenched on gears before I'd recommend you have a professional shop do it. Or, you'll just end up pushing your truck.............as usualLOL

I'm pretty sure that Dieselmaster or Mastertech could help shed some more light on this, I've wrenched a lot too but gears I don't mess with.

Don't mess with it unless you absolutely have to. A rear shop can do it for a reasonable cost.

Why are you going to 4.10's? I think 3.55's are perfect with a little light bombing.

You're fuel mileage will suffer and you'll be running a lot more RPM's at 70 MPH+

Duke,

Looks like he needs to change to 4:10's since that is whats in his rear end right now. Hes looking to swap out a Dana 50 to a Dana 60 front axle. The 60 hes found has 3:55's in it.

Paul,

As hard as 60's are to get your hands on you might just pick it up and take it to a rear end shop and have them put in a 4:10 set for you.

95 Stroker,

OK, I see what you mean.

Tell ya what TP, unless you're towing a monster trailer, you might want to put a 3.55 unit in the rear. I think the 3.55's or 3.73's are the best gears for these trucks. Your truck has so much torque already. There's no reason to go more than 3.73's on a diesel pick-up. You might find it to be cheaper to do the Sterling down to 3.55's rather than the D-60 up to 4.10's, anyway.

I had 4.88's in my 450 and they're awful. I switched to 4.30's. Better, but still too geared-down. With all my Hypermax upgrades, I could tow more with my truck with 3.08's than the stock truck with 4.88's. LOL

Think about it, the 3.55's will also load your motor much better.

4:10's really arent all that bad,,,thats what I am geared at in my F-350. I get between 16 and as high as 19 mpg not towing and never drop below 12 pulling hard. I dont think you'll get mileage like that towing with 3:55's and you might have trouble with EGT's too. But, if you dont tow then 3:55's are the ticket.

I rarely tow and wish I had 3.55s. I get the same mileage as you do Mike, but have heard of guys with 3.55s getting 20+ mpgs consistantly.

Buddy of mine switched to 3.55's from 4.10's in his chipped 7.3L and thinks it's the best thing he's done to his truck. He tows a 13K gooseneck horsetrailer all over the country.

Here's the deal Duke.

The axle I am trying to pick up has 3:55's and my truck already has 4:10 gears in it. But with the 4:10 gears and 35" tires...mebbe soon to be 37's.....the 4:10 ratio it then reduced to that of a 3:73.

If I swapped out to 3:55 it would further reduce my ratio and wind up with alot less mpg than I have with 4:10's.

Besides I drive like a bat outta hell and I still get 12-16 with my 4:10's combined city and highway driving.

My crew cab with 3:55's gets 19-20

Ohhhh, I didn't realize you were running big tires. My bad.

4.10's would be great with 35-37's.
