So, as a mobile RV tech I work for some interesting people. A bunch of them are race guys of all types. Stock car and drag mainly. The other day a guy was discussing my IDI non turbo work truck(van) and mentioned that he has a remote mounted turbo in a truck that does not show when you pick up the hood. Said the race guys do a bunch of innovative stuff. Is this something anyone in here has attempted? I have read the stories about how hard it is to wedge a factory turbo in a van.

I don't know about factory (ATS 093) turbo but the 085 I had in an 85 E350, the air box lid was tossed aside by the installer back in the 80s, and a home made retaining ring was made to hold down the air filter.

Meanwhile, Banks gen1 put a long hose and a remote mount k&n filter. my 89 has that.

So... mounting the turbo isn't the problem, having air filter access is.

Yeah, I have been looking at those posts. I think it is easier to keep the exhaust down where it belongs and is and run the air supply lines up to the top. I have a compartment in the front right(right over the exhaust) of this ambulance that I could easily modify and bring in outside air thru a large flat filter with a vent hole and a custom made box. Just a hole down thru the floor to the Turbo. This guy also mentioned they are coming out or have come out with turbo's that dont need oil feed lines. Permanently lubricated and sealed. Have not looked into that yet. I would think the supply lines to the intake would be much lower temperature then those exhaust lines up in that area. Still studying and reading etc. Thanks for any opinions and suggestions.

One problem with a remote mounted turbo is that it greatly increases the turbo lag. The longer the exhaust has to travel to get to the turbo, the slower it will spool up.

My remote mount idea is right in the current exhaust stream, the air to the intake will travel further.

Also, I am not looking for incredible HP gains. I just want a little more pep in the step.

Where in the current exhaust system? The distance that's important here is the distance from the heads to the turbo, not the distance that the air has to travel although that may have some effect too. Have you ever seen how the 7.3 PSDs route the exhaust to the turbo? Those use the shortest distance from the manifolds to the turbo possible.

R&D does the same thing with their IDI turbo kits. Hypermax does the opposite. Very long uppipes. For ‘velocity’. Not laggy at all though… but the diameter is small. Unconventional design for sure…

Another thing is that if these "oil free" turbos are designed for gasoline engines, then a IDI might not be able to get much boost out of them anyway.

@raydav has a remote turbo on his van. A 7.3 PS turbo, non wastegated.

Running the van hard he sees around 7 psi and no longer blacks out the sky. He uses a scavenger pump rated to run dry to return the oil.

Sounds like he is very happy with it and I plan to copy him down the road.

There is also a blog from a kid doing dual turbos on his van but can’t find his site.

I’m no expert but I have digested a couple things. A remote turbo system has more disadvantages than advantages but here it goes....

The charge air pipe will cool some negating the need for an inter/after cooler at low boost. The key too efficiency is keeping the heat in the exhaust. So wrap the exhaust well.

I have also dreamed of using exhaust cutouts in such a way to only engage the turbo when needed ( high elevation, towing, Mtn passes) and not wasting the energy when cruising on the highway.

Thanks for the replies. We are not talking about putting the turbo at the tailpipe. Just behind the engine in line with the exhaust I have a large open area. And access to areas to make a filter housing. And I am in the same boat as raydav, I only want a little help in the hills, even moderate ones. No one has answered how much boost I need and it is near impossible to find a number. But there it is, 7 psi. I also looked into pumps to feed the turbo, just threw in the new styles for comments. I have no idea what they cost.
This is a fact finding mission, keep the comments coming....+ or -.

Sounds like you get to rub elbows with some fun people!

This tiny power gain was from a barely turned-up IP and a max boost of about 5 psi.

What's the point, then? That you won't have very much more "pep" until you cross over ~4psi non-aftercooled. Add some charge air cooling and you'll feel more of that power for sure. I highly recommend charge air cooling.

I've read a few threads about IDI remote-mount turbos, one was compounds. Someone else even added a VGT under the bed! They fiddled with an arduino and got the code to make it work acceptably--pretty cool stuff!

The big picture was that none of them complained about turbo lag, even after worrying about it during the build. The biggest issue of course is getting oil back into the crankcase; after that it's "don't oversize your pipes" on longer runs. There are online calculators that help with that, easy to do some research on that front. Just thinking out loud, but you don't NEED to mount the air filter under the hood. You could enclose a filter under the van and run a snorkel to fresh air any darn plan you like!

Do you have a 6.9 or 7.3? There's a difference in max safe boost between the two, favoring the 7.3 quite a bit. I know you aren't looking for big numbers, but it's a factor.

The ATS 093 or factory FORD turbo(same thing made by ATS) is a good starting point for the turbo. If I was going from the ground up, I'd personally try to source something like the R&D Stage 1 or CDD Stage 1 turbo. They are more modern designs and aren't all that expensive, either. They will be more efficient at all levels vs the 093, and capable of higher max boost if you ever want to crank the fuel.
But if you're going "best boost for the buck" then find someone with an incomplete 093 setup that can't sell it cause they don't have the pedestal/crossover pipe and get a nice bargain turbo. Just know that almost every used turbo will be clapped out and need a rebuild. It's just how people are, you rarely get an honest take on a used turbo for these engines. And exception might be if you can find someone on this forum or FTE that can say "I put it in *** miles ago and blew a head gasket and I'm just parting it out" or similar.

Well there's a novel for you! Haha I guess I got carried away. :)
