Is the rear main seal on my 6.9 in the block or on that plate on the back of the engine? Need to replace while the engine is on the stand....

True. Its in the plate and easy to replace that way. There is a factory gasket behind the plate too but.. No reason to replace it seeing we use nothing but RTV for the oil pan seal. So why not illiminate that gasket and use the RTV there too. Might want to check the seal surface on the crank to see if it has any groove worn into it. If one is found its time for the seal and speedi sleeve repair. Ford sells that sleeve and seal as one package. So do other seal makers. Towcat posted the seals and part numbers in the parts bin forum. Just a cautionary note about the plate. At the oil pan you have several places that require special attention to RTV. Thats the where the block, the oil pan and the plate connects in the corners. Be sure this area is operating room clean or you wil have a oil leak. And no oil pan gasket... EVER.. They can be purchased but they are not to be used. They will leak down the road and then your pulling the engine again to do the job with RTV. Russ likes the grey and I like the permatex ultra copper plus. I have never had that stuff leak on me and it cleans up easily too.

DO NOT USE a pan GASKET
ONLY USE RTV sealant...no gasket.
Is engine out of truck, I will make a guess it is.
Pan and block must be 100% surgically clean or RTV will not seal. NO gasket no sealant will if there is any oil on the rails!

Sorry Al...i didn't type that right...i meant to say i would redo the rvt on it.....somebody already took the gasket off and put rvt on it...or did they come that way from the factory?

In my post I mentioned that these engines came factory with just RTV. Never came with an oil pan gasket ever. The aftermarket is trying to make a buck by selling something that we don't
need nor does it work.

I"ve got to locate the SPEEDI SEAL installation tool I've got a rear main sleeve and seal given to me...ugh!

Didn't know you had to have a special tool for the speedy seal... Didn't have to have one when i installed one on my ranger when i put a new clutch in...but that's apples to oranges....
