Questions about power to the GP controller and manual switch......

I hooked up a manual switch (went by the tech write up) and I don't think (I know by watching the volt gauge) that I am getting power to the glow plugs. What is the best way to check the power to the controller and to the wires for each of the glow plugs? The truck has been hard cranking the past few days though I had air getting in. I miss with it today for a short time and when I got back in it to come back to the house it wouldn't crank. I hit the button and was watching the volt gauge but it never moved. I need to find out where the power is coming in to it. I am going to plug it in to see if that will crank it in the morning. I would like to get some info on it.

what does a glow plug controller look like? is it the same thing as a relay? does a controller look like the thing that sticks out of the engine like the one in the picture (S)?
