hey guys, i have been reading alot of threds and i see alot things like putting ATF and used oil with your fuel.. can sombody explain to me why you do this and what it does.. thanks id appriciate it

Adding atf or oil to the fuel stretches the mpg some plus... It lubes the pump and injectors better than the diesel fuel we have to run these days. If you have a worn out injection pump adding oil to the fuel will thicken the diesel sometimes enough to make the pump build pressure to open the injectors.

I run roughly a quart per tank. She runs noticeably quieter when she's not drinking pure diesel.

You put a quart of used oil in every tankful of diesel in your truck?
I prefer to put diesel (fuel) with my oil. Lol.
@ OP: read up on using motor oil as a fuel before you jump into it. Like everything, it comes with consequences (both good and bad). One has to weigh out the scenario once adequately informed before making a decision.
IMO this is a great site for this subject. It's how I got started in it and the group never led me astray.

I let it settle, and then run it through a filter again... but yea, I do exactly that.

If you’re looking for an "additive" to help lube things, 2 stroke oil works good. 2 stroke oil is made to burn and Wallymarts sell it for a reasonable price. Regular oil will work too, just not made to burn. 1/2 to 1 ounce per gallon works well, it's not rocket science so just dump some in.
If you’re looking for "cheap" fuel, then the WMO, ATF, Jet fuel, or whatever will burn can be used but usually take a cleaning step before burning it, see the alternative fuels forum.

There are a couple of different things you are referring to.
First are the guys who add a quart or so to help the lubricity of the new ULSD.
The second is the guys who actually run a significant portion of their fuel (5-100%) oil.
I would like to get into WMO, but I'm a bit hesitant to burn it in any of my newer diesel's. My IDI sure, but anything else I dont know.

Adding a NEW lubricant to your fuel to help with lubricity is always a good idea. However, adding a USED lubricant to your fuel to help with lubricitity is not.
The reason you want to run USED motor oil in your fuel tank, is to save money. However, the savings are not pure. You will spend more money and time in engine maintanance. The reason is that used motor oil, or waste motor oil as it is called, will create more smoke, leave more deposits in your engine, and potentially make it harder to start. You will end up spending money on glow plugs, injector pumps and injectors. A new fuel system costs about $1000 (figure a new IP, a set of injectors and a return line kit). Getting the deposits out of the pre-cup, will involve breaking them up with a screw driver. In severe cases, you may need to pull the heads. However, if you run your truck on 80% WMO, you will save about $150 per refuel. Do that 6 or 7 times, and you've paid for your new fuel system. However many refuels you can get out of it after that are freebies.
If you just want to compensate for the junk fuel the refinery sells us these days, then just add some Howes Diesel Treat.

I would do some research rather than just go with what is said. Testing on lubricity has been done with regards to fuels and additives. The internet is the world's largest source of misinformation when used without regard to verification or scientific principles.
I also remember reading a post about a guys that rebuilds IP's and that waste oil really wears them out badly.
For me, nothing goes in my tanks that is not new or freshly refined. I would rather pay more than drop tanks to clean or chase down a fueling problem, or be left stranded 1k miles from home. My truck is not disposable, but many people treat old vehicles like they are. My truck serves an important purpose and being without it will cost WAY more than fuel savings associated with using something like wmo.
