pump timing

my 1987 6.9 idi has had a problem with the timing since i bought it because it is clearly off but i need to get the injection pump properly timed and i do not want to take may water pump off, whats a easier way to time the pump than taking the water pump off

Some history of whats up would be helpful

Did you do the no no and remove your pump with the gear cover by indoing the four vertical bolts?

If so it could be off for sure.

If not then it likely isnt off but may need a timing meter.

If the original poster can tell us how the injection pump might have been replaced sure could help us. Now many miles are on the pump and where did this pump come from.
As already posted.. You DO NOT need to remove the water pump to time these engines.
