Took the truck to a shop yesterday. It will be there a while.

Truck started up beautifully.

Made the trip beautifully.

All.... With no fuel lift pump whatsoever.

Has the electric installed. But I never turned it on.

Started up the way you'd expect any 92 7.3 idi na, to.

Made the entire trip with no problem whatever. Even up very steep hills.

I'm starting to wonder why we even HAVE lift pumps on NA engines...

The IP will pull fuel through the filter? Or what am I missing? Seems like this shouldn't work.

Pretty much everything. If I don't, at my rate of speed, I'll still be working on it next spring, and not even considering it for a daily driver yet.

Brakes. Tank selector. Alternator/gauge. Trans. Etc...
Thats got to be ******* the IP.
How so? It's a pump. It's designed to pump. Making it pump is ******* it?

Apparently so. My mechanical pump is completely disconnected. The electric pump was turned off. yet it started and made the trip...

Well its designed to have positive pressure going to it, its essentially having to pull a negative pressure on the fuel line to tank to "suck" fuel. Its one of the leading cause of VP44 failures, which operate in the same basic manor as our DB2's, and thats with operating at lower then spec pressure, not negative (these are on the 98-02 24v cummins). That said they have an internal pump, though the name escapes me, that will pull fuel from the tank. Its just not advised.

Thank you. I am going to put the electric fuel pump on a switched power source when I get the truck back, to prevent driving it without the pump going.

I think *somebody* did, and I told them I was going to do it, and just use another method to disconnect the fuel pump, if I need to do some testing with it off. ;):D

Thinking about this. I think the takeaway for me, at least, is that if you have an NA truck, and you lose your fuel pump... It looks like you'll be able to at least limp home without it.

Someone else with an electric fuel pump on an NA engine, should try turning the EFP off while driving, and see what happens.

I'm going to put that fuel pump on a circuit that has power with the key in run. And maybe a bullet connector near the pump, to disconnect it when I want to have the key on, but not have the pump running.

Then I'll repurpose the toggle to turn the GP circuit off and on. Leaving the GP circuit intact, otherwise.

It would depend on the electric pump. Some flow through easier than others when off. With a tight fuel system, you can definitely get around with a dead pump. I had one on my 6.2 that I occasionally forgot to flip the switch on. Could tell a difference in power at higher rpm. But ran fine otherwise.
Same for a 7.3 powerstroke.....

Yep, makes sense.

Also, there was a point, toward the end of the trip...

I went through a roundabout. As I accelerated out of that, there was a tiny puff of white smoke, and then it ran rough the rest of the way.

It was only about a quarter mile from there to the shop, so not bad. But yeah, it ran rough enough to shake as if the driveshaft were out of balance or something.

Absolutely NOT going to make it a practice of running without that pump.
