I'm posting this to ease your mind cuz it sure as hell upset me when mine did the same thing. Well that and the dang little conv. store guy ;Pissed ...whole nuther story. With mine we just added a crap load of tranny fluid and waited for her to cool. Then we just pulled off with TT in tow like nothing ever happend. Had a great meet and drove to Atlanta then home with no problems. I would definately add the tranny coolers; I too need to do some modding on mine.

Ericbotin, Thank you for your response... It is a releif to hear someone else that had the same problem.

I thought the tranny was toast.

I have been holding off putting fluid in it until after I figure out what I was going to do for a trany cooler or new pan or both, I kindof hate to get rid of the pan I have becaue I have a nice tranny heater for when I plug it in in the winter months.

I like the plate style cooler's that Pafixitman has I would love to see how/where you have those things mounted up, have any pics?

Well I filled it back up with tranny fluid, it took a little over 7 quarts. I bought a couple of cases of tranny fluid so when I decide what kind of tranny cooler I want I will just drain this stuff out hook up the cooler and put in new stuff. Kind of like giving it a flush. The fluid I had it it before was only 5 months old with a few thousand miles on it.

The good news is its back on the road again and shifting fine.

Thanks everyone for your posts.

Pafixitman, I look forward to the pic's when you get the time... I think you have the cooler I want to buy.

Poolguy, if I understand you correctly this happend once before and it just happend for a second time today? Was there any metal particles in it? did the dark stuff look like overcooked oil?

BWise,
I was pulling a 17K lb machine about 100 miles. Yes there was clutch material in the pan. (Had just changed fluid & filter the night before too!)
I put it in the Ford dealership (I know) and ordered a factory re-man trans.
About $3500. "out the door" with an additional cooler. 3yr/75k mile warranty at any ford dealership. I found better prices, but feel like I need the warranty.
For what it's worth, the trans was in its protection mode (OD light blinking and shifting hard) the code said the torque conv clutch had been slipping but I hoped it would make the trip. It didn't.
For what it's worth, now that I"ve cooked mine, these trans HAVE to be kept cool. Heat WILL eat them up!!!!!!!!!
Trust me, a good trans cooler is a very worthwhile investment.

People with long memories might remember the first IDI weekend near the NW Pa / Ohio border. I arrived with burnt fluid, after pulling some long grades . I missed the drive activites as Sharon and I hunted down some fresh fluid, vinyl tubing, and a 5 gallon pail with a lid. I changed the fluid at the campground, and carried the burny fluid home for proper disposal. I have had no problems since then.
The point being that burnt fluid, if it is quickly changed, doesn't mean that the tranny is toast. Just get it out ASAP.

Another source for aluminum extra capacity trans pans is Summit Racing. I got a ATI pan for my C-6 from them. It has a drain plug and I had a 1/4" pipe thread port welded in the side for a temp gauge.
