:bsNope... This is not located by the oil filter. This cooler runs from one side of the under engine cross member to the power steering pump. Thats what Ford called a cooler....:D How they figured this was going to cool the fluid must have something to do with the length the oil travels and the under truck air this area catches...:dunnor

Mine rubbed a hole in it and as soon as I fixed that one it blew another so I just went and bought a cheapo tranny cooler and routed the drain on the pump through that cooler. Been fine ever since

It is just a metal line loop. It goes on the front of the engine crossmember, under the front of the engine. If I remember correctly, I paid about $40 for one for my 95 F150 about 2 years ago. It is basically the same cooler line.

I too use a Trans cooler. Both my rigs have hydroboost, and can get hot fast. I have boiled the fluid in my crawler before putting the big Trans cooler on.

I just bought one of these from Uhaul and received it yesterday. My wife wondered what in the world I bought because it arrived in a huge box - 16x16x36. Total cost with shipping was 25 bucks. Ford lists these at $165! Mine has been leaking a up by the hose part, so I thought what the heck - I'll replace it with this. Genuine Ford Part!

It's one of those thoroughly neglected items that you really need to get under there once in a while and clean off as they get all caked up with a mix of oil, diesel, road tar, gravel, bugs, dirt, and enough other yuk to pack the things in so tight that after a while they do more to keep the heat in, than to help dissipate it. I remember when I went to change the steering box on mine, I was chasing the hoses and couldnt figure where this one was going.. it just disappeared into the front crossmember LOL took some scraping to find it  ( P.O.had had a nasty steering pump leak that I took care of first week I got the thing, but even with everything I had done up to that point, I hadnt' dug all the extra stuff off the frame ( hey since it was oil based, I figured rust proofing so why disturb it )

I got the cheap Duralast brand at Autozone for $19.99 + tax , but it did not come with the clamps to secure it to the crossmember. This appears to be better quality. It says 95-97 but it should work all the way down to 1980.

Mine has one of those as well, and it just died catastrophically. As far as I could determine from talking to a handful of local diesel geeks, it's some kind of aftermarket cooler or filter. :dunno I plan to disconnect the factory return line/ "cooler" from it, and just route the line back into the pump.
