Post hydroboost conversion questions/comments.

So I did it...down to the junk yard to search out a solution to my trucks mediocre brakes. Found a f-superduty and robbed it of its power steering pump, hydroboost, master cylinder and all lines. After some this and that mods, shes in. Just drove it around, amazing...I can lock'em up now. My following distance no longer has to be 10 car lengths for every 10mph. The only issue, I have what sounds like a power steering belt squeal at high rpms, just before shift. The belt is newer but the power steering pump's pulley has two belt grooves my old one had one groove. Does the added load of the hydroboost system make a second belt necessary? I can turn the truck lock to lock with no whine or squeal and I can slide the truck to a stop with no squeal, other than the tires Or is this noise something else...hydroboost issue? I dont want to change to the old pump because the junk yard pump is noticeably more powerful in the steering. Lastly the junk yard charged me $115 for it all, is that about right? If so, I have no idea why anyone would keep that vacuum booster. Mine was leaking so my c-6 is pretty happy right now, getting the appropriate vacuum and all.

Hands down the best thing I have ever done to my truck. I gave 200 for mine.

idi trucks need a few updates.
1.electric fuel pumps.
2.hydroboost brakes. - factory on 87-97 f450's
3.3g alternators. - factory on mid year of '92 idi's with serpentine belts - '94

those 3 are mandatory imho.the rest of the upgrades are bonuses.

That was a good deal on the upgrade. No matter how many times its posted talking about the benefits of hydroboost brakes. Those that have never "felt" the difference will never know till they drive a rig with it. Hydroboost more than doubles the weak 1000 lbs of vacuum hydraulic brake pressure. Its just so comforting to know you have twice the braking ability but hoping you never have to use it. I drove my crewcab many hundreds of thousands of miles with the vacuum brakes. I had no idea till I made the change and now I realize the benefits.

COOL ! could i ask for some pics of the plumbing? Im building a custom F250 Peterbilt mini using 1990 IDI driveline and converting to Hydroboost out of a 2006 E-van...the lines were cut and no idea on how they are ran. I have to get custom lines anyway but need to see where each goes. i have the p/s pump for the boost too..

No I didnt get the pedal, the truck was a manual transmission and someone had already got the tranny and pedal hanger with pedals...conversion im sure. So....I chose to center the hydrobooster input shaft to my stock pedal by drilling new holes on its mounting plate. The pictures for the lines are attached but admittedly not very good. If you Google it you can find images and sketches for proper routing. I didnt even take the lines off but felt it necessary to verify anyways. Oh....dont make fun of my trucks lack of under-hood cleanliness...im getting there, havent had it too long.

Doing it that way works ok.

I originally did it that way, then changed over to the "correct" pedal.

Yeah, I had found your thread and plan on snatching a correct pedal when I stumble across one at the junk yard. Thanks for your earlier thread...helped motivate me to begin with.

thank you!! so can i use a f450 brake pedal that had a vacuum booster?? mines all custom, so location isnt a problem. excuse the ignorance, just want to do this ONCE

I would say use what you can make work. Just keep geometry of the booster input shaft correct. Yours is so custom, I don't know it will really matter.

the 87-97 f-sd/f-450's only came with hydroboost (and 4 wheel disc brakes.) none of them came equipped with vac brakes..........if they did you wouldn't have been able to stop them hardly when empty,let alone when loaded.

ah, ok thanks, my pedal assembly is from a 92 IDI f350, as i am converting to a manual (motor is a 90 IDI auto w/vacuum) and putting hydroboost because of firewall clearance on my mini peterbilt. a Vacuum booster, that i have, wont fit under the cowl panel, but the hydroboost has plenty of room. sorry i wasnt clear or give you all the info needed. so, let me reask the question, what do i have to do to make the hydro boost work with a 92 F350 pedal assembly. thanks guys!!!! funny thing is, originally i was building this truck on a 90 F-superduty frame with a 4.88 rear....but the 10 lug alloys were $$$$$$$$ compared to the 04 chassis and axles im running now (4.10 8x170)
