Perma-Cool filter head crack

So I installed a perma-cool filter and aux cooling unit for my transmission back during the summer.

I mounted the filter head right above the axle, next to the leaf spring on the passenger side:

I believe due to its location it developed a crack. Right in the center is has a hairline crack in the filter head.

I was driving around for awhile last night (the engine and trans were at operating temps) and a cold rain started falling.

I drove the rig today out in the country and ran it on some gravel roads. I noticed that the end of the filter had a nice 1/4 inch gouge in it also which may have been from a rock.

Just trying to think if it cracked because it got up to normal operating temps and then got a splash of cold water on it causing it to crack or if it could have gotten hit with enough force froma rock to get cracked???

What do you guys think? I ask because I am wondering if the filter head should be moved? Also, where can I get just the filter head?

The only reason I found the crack was because of a sizeable leak that left a nice big stain on my driveway!!!!

I might need to rig up some sort of splash gaurd protection if I leave it in its current location!!!

Is the crack going into one of the 3 ports? If so, that would mean you tightened the fitting too tight. If not, then maybe it got splashed. I tucked mine out of the way so it can't be hit easily.

I don't think it would get hot enough to fracture from heat/cold splash unless your transmission it turning unreal temps. I'm guessing over tightening or it took a shot from something. My opinion, move it! I don't like things down in harms way like that and I'm guessing you now know why, I won't even use fumoto valves and the like on my truck, to prone to damage.

Aluminum wont crack from thermal shock like other meteals will. You may have tightened up a fitting just a bit too much. Is the crack thru a fitting???

The crack is in the center of the filter head. I can see now how it could have been from over tightening.....

I think it must have gotten some sort of impact from a rock or something......

Now I just need to get another filter head!

I would relocate it to where it's not in the line of fire so much. I had mine mounted in the center of the truck so that it would not see debris kicked up by the tires.

I ran a limb from a tree right up through there on mine...and I was on a paved road! Mine sees a lot of time off road, hunting, hauling people for the fish and game club, etc. so that's why I'm a little paranoid. The limb I picked up on the road would have destroyed that filter assembly where it's mounted.
