dont wanna steal the thread but it is on the topic. i am getting a 76 f250 that(suposedly) has a D44 w/60 hubs, according to my brother. is this right or is an 8-lug D44, or a D60? i am thinking about putting it in my 91 depending on what it is.

I believe the D44HD, D50 and D60 all use the same hubs. It's quite easy to tell the D60, it's a solid front axle. The others are TTB axles. I can't swear that the D44HD uses the same hubs either, but that is what I've been told. When I bought my hubs, they listed them to fit a D50 and D60. The D60 also listed a spline count (27 IIRC) which was the stock spline, which is what mine were.

IIRC all pre-'80 Ford trucks used solid axles...I don't know if a Dana 50 was available, but I do recall a solid Dana 44 being available on the F-250 in the '70's.

That said, I am by no means an expert...hopefully someone will confirm this info :)

Yeah, you are correct. They used a solid axle D44 under rear of jeeps as well. I guess I should have said from 83 up, but at any rate, the hubs on ANY of the 44's (omitting a D44HD possibly I really can't confirm either way) are much smaller than what is on my D60, that is on any D44 I've seen. I had 6 Ford trucks that were pre-83, if you look at the axles under most of them, they were tiny, except the 66 F250 I had, it had a VERY hefty front axle, have no idea what it was, never took the time to figure it out. I sold all the running gears to a guy that said it was a very tough axle, but it didn't appear any heavier built than a D60.

That's a D44HD, axle shafts and diff are same as the regular D44, but the pumpkin is larger and the axle tubes are 1/2" thick instead of 3/8". Hubs I ain't too sure about, but the thing does use the Dana 60 calipers, even tho knuckles are different from the D60.

hmm... thanks guys, i'll just have to go and look at it with my own two eyes i think. i will be getting it for $150 so no matter what it is it is worth the money, also it has a divorced np205 which will work great for putting the 6.9w/allison in the 78bronco or putting a 6-speed in the 91. i'm kinda torn

We put a 44hd from a late 70's high boy into an 83 f250 (redneck lift!). Just had to weld new perches for the springs. We also used the drive shaft from the other truck. The kid that owned the truck was a complete moron and had 3.55s in the back and 4:10s in the front. He ended up blowing the motor before the trasfer case or axles (go figure). Other then that it worked perfectly.

Did 2wd F350 duallies have D60's in them(86-97)?
I don't think they used a 60...considering that even pre-'85 F-250HD's used the Dana 70 axle. IIRC they either used a dualie version of the 10.25" or they used a dualie Dana 70. I'm not sure which...and, of course, there wouldn't be a Dana 60 front axle in a 2 wheel drive truck :)

all dana44 (hd or reg) use the same hubs, only the dana50 shares the same hubs as the dana60, if it has big hubs like a dana60, then it is a dana60. the whl bearings on the dana44 and the dana44hd are the same, as are ball joints and ect. few little differances but in no way should they be close to the dana50 or dana60. so to answer your question the dana44 and the dana44hd share the same hubs, but not with the dana50 or dana60.

Thanks...I've never seen a 44 with the same hubs, but when I was looking for hubs, someone was adamant they were the same (D44HD and D60). I have no idea, and really didn't care. I ordered what I needed new and went from there! :)
