Oil dip stick tube???

Hello guys .. Bringing this Thread back to life , As I was working around the removal of my valve covers to replace the Valve cover gaskets . I ended up pulling my dip stick tube and did not know / Noticed the way it truly came out as it happened pretty quick , Now i am having a hard time installing it back in place . When i tried to go from outside the header towards the block it makes the tube not possible to reach inside the tube going into the oil pan . I pulled few pictures of IDI and see that it enters between the headers on the 3rd piston . Can some one please confirm .

Is it ok to use some Black RTV on the end of the tube .

That is where it goes, and it's a pita to get back in. I tore two o rings and don't think my third one is sealing properly still. Like the rtv idea that many say worked, and may try that if I find mine leaking.

I dropped it through the header like that, lined up with the bracket up top, then stuck my head in the wheel well and worked to force it in place. Will be watching what others say on this thread.

Well i am glad i ended up holding off on taking the starter out and came here to ask cause it's a greater PITA to remove the 3rd back bolt out . SO i am going to fish it thru the 3header hole and down to the pan she goes ( i hope ) . I been reading on here that plenty of guys with the same dip stick tube had much success with the RTV ( black RTV ) i would say

Skip the o ring deal seal. Its just too tuff installing it. Now use plenty of RTV but make sure everything is very clean or the RTV wont seal correctly. Brakeclean works very well cleaning. So what if a little bit gets in the oil. It will burn off when the oil gets warmed up. Your most difficult area using RTV is the back side of the tube. Thats why I apply RTV in the fitting on the block and on the tube itself. Just push the tube in the fitting and forget about it.

Thanks guys .Every thing went so smooth as i hoped for compare to yesterday and this past weekend when i brook the original tube going from outside the headers. I used nice amount of RTV not to much to plug the hole on both the tube it self and the plug by the oil pan . I been working on this truck and doing pro active maintenance and it's been kicking my rear end i tell ya . Now am waiting on a new CDR to replace the one i damaged ( Don't ask me how i did it ) . Get it started and hope the source of oil drip drip been eliminated
