After installing a mechanical oil gauge on the 83 6.9 I have be working on getting roadworthy again I discovered that on cold startup the oil pressure is 100 psi+ that will slowly start to drop according to the Bosh mechanical gauge I'm using. Im the past few months I have had several oil filters blow out seals( which I now believe to be because of the oil pressure).

Does this sound like the pressure regulating valve in the oil cooler

Will the headers from a 83 cooler fit a new two ring style cooler or will I need the whole thing.

I think the O ring kit is interchangeable if you want to rebuild the one you got. It just takes two kits for the extra 2 O rings.

Ok so o I should be able to get the 2 o-ring kits to rebuild mine or use a two o-ring design cooler with these old headers I've searched info on the 6 ring coolers quite a bite on the topic but it doesn't talk about much besides the fact that you can't get the 3 o-rings anymore so all information on it would be appreciated

Ok would I still be able to use my original headers with a 2 o-ring oil cooler or are they different as well?

Since I'm in no hurry to have the truck running Im going to attempt to pull of the headers and measure the small o-ring thickness and ID so that I can go about searching for replacements.

To pull the cooler on a '90 7.3 idi you need to
Remove ps pump
Pull steering column or at least the telescoping steering shaft

Or split the cooler before pulling it out

That much i do know

Thnx shawn deere I like that method since I can keep the cooler in one piece. It wasn't leaking at the orings internally or externally ( although I might open it up and get measurements so I can try to find some new orings that will fit )but I want to check the pressure valve to see if it's causing my high oil pressure. The truck did sit for about 5-6 years

I likely have the orings you need. The regulator can be fixed.

The regulator is not accessible externally.
