As stated above, how do you tell the difference between a 5.9 and an 8.3 ? I found obs but want to make sure I have a 5.9 rather than the 8.3. The engine currently resides in a 91rush ward school bus.

Thanks billy

The 8.3 is a ISC family and a 5.9 is a ISB so if you look at the data plate on the front gear cover on the injection pump side it will give you what engine family and displacement I believe. Other than that its hard to tell on the older ones. Maybe someone else will chime in

The 8.3 is about 4 in longer and 3in taller than the 5.9. the flywheel is also much bigger than the 5,9

The pump numbers will tell you also what the motor is, and what power rating.

I looked at a 475hp 6cta to do a repower of our boat. Seller said it was 475 but had a 290hp pump.

I almost have it ready to pull but didn't check for tags. It looks like a 6bt and doesn't seem all thaybig but it is in a school bus so proportions are out the window. I double check tomorrow.

It's prolly a 6bt. The 6ct will fit in a pickup with a mild body lift. I shoved a mechanical 12v in a f350 before but it's tight. The 8.3 looks huge compared to the 5.9. The bad side to running the 8.3 is they don't smoke when turned up and the egts climb real quick.

I've yet to see an ISC with 6 rocker covers, they usually have a one piece cover like a 24V ISB even if they had a P-pump.

I finished pulling it today. Payed the Junkyard , tooled it outside the gate and wiped some grease off the tag. Its a 91 6bt that they thought was a boat motor lol. They had no idea what it was .

That's the eventual plan. Have to sell a bunch of idi parts and turbos to buy all the adapters. Heck I bought a 093 Turbo right before the cummins so ill probably sell that to fund this project lol.

Nice  6bt with a ve bosch pump, really easy to work on.
You want to do the KDP cross bolt while it is out and use the gear case cover with the wear sleeve.
The oil pan look a bit different but maybe it is the angle on the pictures.

Can you tell me more about the wear sleeve. Never worked on a cummins.

I believe the oil pan is an 18q pan. I need to find a dodge version with the dodge oil pickup.

Sure, everyone of mine (3 so far) I did the KDP with a bolt coming across the gear case right in front of the KDP and when I do that I order a crank seal WITH a wear sleeve bc the seal will usually wear a grove on the crank and when You install a regular seal it will seep or leak oil sooner. Just gasket maker on the crank seal surface and push the wear sleeve IN, clean up the excess and ready to go. I get them direct from cummins they are better in My opinion and ask for the install tool, some times they come with it. Have Your engine serial # handy for this to avoid mistakes.

BTW when You are doing the KDP remember to remove, lock-tite and tighten ALL the gear case bolts as well.

Billy - KDP = killer dowel pin.

the fastest way to blow up a Cummins. I made my own with a little piece of flat steel.
