my starter was just barely turning and truck still not starting after thoroughly going through batteries, cables, connections, etc so i took the starter to a local shop for bench testing. at first it did nothing, then the guy bypassed the first big stud on the (starter mounted) solenoid and went to the second one and then it turned over. he noted that it pulled 200 amps on the bench which he thought was high but it was a tractor shop and they don't usually test this kind of starter so he couldn't say for sure that was too much.
the conclusion was that the solenoid was not working. Is it common for a solenoid to go out after less than a year? What could cause that?
i don't quite understand how that could have caused the barely-cranking problem but for the moment it is the only thing i can think of to try to get this started again is to replace the solenoid.

anyone care to comment?
thanks,
paul

What brand? I only trust Motorcraft for quality. I'm not saying other aftermarket isn't good, but if your finding quality or parts reliability problems, don't mess around and go OEM.
