Hello, I bought my first diesel, it leaked diesel behind the top of the pump, weep hole I think, so I pulled the pump according to directions from "another" web site, I now think I did something wrong and need help to get it back together. I took it to a local rebuild shop today. I removed the 16 point (3) screws and the four (4) 9/16ths bolts and pulled the whole assembly. I now understand I may have a timing issue upon reinstallation. I think I now have to static time it? I marked it well as shown. Also do I use siclone sealer for both the bottom of the (Front?) housing I removed and for the oil fill cover?

You should have left that front cover on and removed the 3 nuts that hold it at the rear. Now you need to static time it. Its hard to do without removing the front cover but there is 1 other way if you follow this links directions real close:

http://www.members.shaw.ca/k2pilot/Timing article.htm

If you do this wrong it will be 180 degrees off. The best way is to remove the front cover. I was just through this recently.

If you have it real close where it sits now you might be able to use the timing marks on the front cover if you put the mark on the crank with the 0 mark. There is a thread somewhere on here showing those timing marks. I think they line up with the bolt holes in the gear when looking at it through the front.

Well.... Pulling the gear cover like that has make the big smelly....:D Now you need to get the gear timing marks lined up and thats really difficult to see... It can be down. Both the injection pump gear and cam gear have a timing mark that the letter "Y" on them. This picture may help you to understand the marks...

Thanks all, I think I have an good idea of what to do, one more question: the bottom of the Front Gear Cover looks like it might have a gasket on it, is that just silcone gasket sealer or do I need a gasket to reinstall the Front Gear Cover?

This is a quote from the timing article, can someone explain to me what the rotating the whole pump assembley is about? Its held on by four bolts, I don't see how it can rotate slightly. "the injection pump (fuel) timing will be set approximately (static timing) and should only require fine tuning (rotating the whole pump assembly slightly) to set it accurately"

The Timing Gear, and cover remain stationary, and when You turn the IP it rotates on the IP shaft, thus changing the timing of the IP.

The IP is bolted to the gear with 3 bolts. It is held on the gear cover with 3 bolts. You loosen the 3 bolts holding the IP to the cover, and rotate the IP to adjust the IP timing.

Always saddens me to learn of people still doing this the wrong way. Between other forums, and that stupid youtube video, this repair you now face is quite popular, and oh so preventable.

as long as he didnt clean the red marks off and can line them up right he can put it back together as long as the motor hasnt been spun over.atleast he was smart enough to mark it before takin it off.

I've had good luck with a BRIGHT light, and mirror, seeing the gear marks.

I've done it that way on a coupla local rigs.

Also, DO NOT loosen the IP/Cover bolts with the engine running. I know a Guy that did that, and the gear jumped a coupla teeth. Chipped the IP gear in a coupla spots. I don't think it effected the gear to much, He's still running the truck. But He called Me, wondering Why He couldn't get the truck timed. Duh!

And, The IP Gear Cover is sealed with Silicone Sealer. No Gasket.
