Went out and bought my first diesel truck last week. always been a ford guy. Currently have a 2012 mustang gt 6mt. Happy with where it is at right now untill I decided to put a blower on it. So my urge to have something to tinker with has been hanging over my head. This truck belonged to a guy that used to work with us. Sat in our back lot for about 2 years since the last time it ran. Took us a few hours of guessing and checking as this truck with a wiring nightmare. Honestly need to start with a complete new truck harness. This guy has hacked up so much of it that it's hard to trace anything. Anyways found a dead glow plug and a short in then glow plug harness on the passenger side. After bleeding all the air out of the system fired up after some cranking. Idled for a few mins then water in fuel light came on sputtered and died. That's where we're at right now. Drained a full tank of fuel out. Next set it clean the tank and fuel system out.

Truck is a 89 7.3 with a e4od. Was told trans is built. Has a shift kit but it has no tach signal and won't shift. Acts like its slipping in drive. Drop to 1 and it's fine. Trucks a train wreck. Lol. But I see the potential on it. Truck was stripped. Frame blasted coated rebuilt front and rear end new suspenion. Truck was painted but it's a 30 footer and I will be re painting it and probably swaping the front clip.

Picked the truck up for 500 bucks

I'll start a project thread here at some point.

Welcome to the forum. Getting the water out of the fuel system and mostly the injection pump is really important. Rust will ruin the internals of the injection pump and the injectors. What I would do is run a 1 or 5 gallon can of fuel to the mechanical lift pump found under the passenger side of the engine. Its below the vacuum pump on the edge of the block. Just run a rubber hose to the fuel can. Replace the fuel filter before doing this. No telling how old it is or how full of water it is. When you install the new clean fuel filter fill it with atf fluid thru the outside ring of small holes in the filter. This will make the filter do its job filtering the atf. Get the engine running and watch the temps. There is a really simple way to jump start these engines. On the passenger side fender well is a solenoid. See that it runs directly to the battery. Now look at the top of the injection pump. There are 2 wires on it. The wire closest to the radiator is the power to operate the injection pump and the rear one is the power to the internal advance. Just run a jumper wire to the front large electrical connecter to the battery. Now remove the push pull wire connector on the solenoid. Use a screwdriver or anything steel to jump it to the back terminal. The engine will run or at least crank doing this. As for the messed up electrical wiring stuff just don't worry bout it yet. You can find complete wiring harness's around. The engine has a separate harness and the main plug is found on the passenger side fender well too. I also have an 89 rig with an E4OD so I'm familiar with what you have.

Forgot to add as well I added a elec pump. I ran 5 gallons of fresh diesel from a fuel can through with just the pump on to clean out everything to the filter. No filter has been bought and a cleaning agent is on the tank right now that will get cleaned out tonight. Does the ATF act as a cleaning and lubercating agent?

Yes, The atf cleans out the injection pump and the injectors. Usually we recommend filling the filter with it. Start the engine and run till you hear the running engine sound change. That tells you the atf is in the pump and injectors. Shut it down and let it work overnite. This will clean the pump and sometimes get the gum thats sticking it up out. Its cheaper than a fuel conditioner.
