as of late, this thing starts really hard,
but after its warm, she starts no problemo.
im thinking glow plugs, but i also have a car quest IDM in it.
which the IDM went bad last time.
my glow plug system is about a year old and im throwing no high to low codes...
another issue i had was a weak starter, which failed 2 weeks later and replaced(remans)
i have a NEW starter in the back seat, which i just may replace.
i repaired this engine with not very much knowledge (head job) on diesels.

i need to limp this thing along for another 3 months while i rebuild the 97 7.3.
then the entire truck is coming apart!
F350 DRW frame swap and a cab extention.

what are the symptoms of a weak HPOP???
i have another in stock but hesitant to throw it on.,.,.

what would you do?

i have not pulled codes yet.

Check the oil level in the HPOP when cold before cranking, maybe it's bleeding down when it sits?

Correct. I think mine is a Allen.
The one on the right of the reservoir when you're looking at it.

warmed the truck up and did every test my solus can do.
failed the contribution test on #3 and # 8
buzz test came back with " no codes present"
and....
(drumroll)

Ah, makes sense now.
I thought you had tried the dormans and they failed immediately, so you went back to motorcraft. Lol

That's common, that 3 & 8 fail. Wouldn't be concerned about it.

On a buzz test, there won't be any codes unless there is no power at all from the IDM, just have to listen for any big difference in sound between them. The sound you hear from them is the coils vibrating, a very low sound (buzz) comparatively, is an indication that, that one is worn, the clearance is only .002, they can be shimmed. Ebay has a kit to do that.
I put a Dorman UVCH in my drivers side 7 yrs ago, still have the one for the pass side if needed. The problem with the OEM, was that the latch on the underside connector didn't hold, the connector would partially slide out and the pins would burn, mainly drivers side for some reason. I always thought it was from the HPOP vibration.
