Hi All,
I bought this 1994 F250 4x4 7.3 IDI, sight-unseen. Lucky for me, the seller was totally honest and had all records for a very well cared for truck. Banks turbo and exhaust, LUV performance clutch, racor heated fuel filter, custom seat, 4.10 gears, 137k miles has towed a 5th wheel a lot and been mostly in dry climate. Payed a small fortune but am selling my much newer GMC gasser. Drove 1650 miles pretty much straight with a short sleep stop to get it home with no issues, 96 g of D2 and no oil used. Now I have to learn anything and everything about it. Great forum!

IMHO This has to be by far the best place for information on the Navistar IDI engines. Make sure you read through the tech articles when you get a chance and if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.

Make sure you update your signature when you get a chance to include your basic vehicle info too. It helps us help you, if you have a problem that you post here.

Yes, the information here is staggeringly great. Before I bought the truck all I knew about was IDI and cavitation. All I have done so far is change oil and flush coolant (was green with Napa-Cool, nothing against that) but filled with green + Fleetguard DCA4. Neither probably needed it but that is just the way I am. If only work would not interfere, maybe I could have some fun!

Nice truck and apparently you got lucky with a nice and honest seller. Also 1650 miles and only 96 gallons of D2 not bad fuel efficiency for 4.10s and a CC/auto tranny. Does it have a pyrometer and boost gauge? It should with those mods. Try and keep EGT below 1200 for a pre trubo and 800-900 post turbo pyro, boost should stay less than 13psi unless the engine is highly modified.

It is the manual 5 speed, I was expecting less mpg though, even at a steady 65 mph. I put Power Service in every tank full for the trip home maybe this helped a tad... Has the EGT, shows something below 300 at idle as it should and I never saw it above about 600 or so (can't remember exactly but it was way out of the danger zone). This was a flat run on I90 to the East Coast and I was empty. I was assuming this temp was preturbo as per the Banks manual that came with it so I need to make sure of this (!). I do not have the boost gauge.

PS The Banks manual says 400-600 at cruise (60 mph level ground no load) and 1050 as the safe maximum. DO I really need the pressure gauge if wastegated? It would be very nice to have the real oil and coolant temperature which I do not have.

Most def gonna need more pictures.

The ZF-5 S42 tranny is purdy tough. Some fresh Mercon ATF can help that out if you don't know the last it was changed, and purdy quick to change if you have a suction gun to refill it.

Yeah the ford dash gauges are purdy much idiot lights with needles so a water temp/oil pressure/boost gauge would be a good addition.

I got it near Duluth, MN drove diagonally across Wisconsin, through Chicago, Cleveland, Buffalo, Albany, Boston. If you want more information about the history of the truck just PM me. I know from reading that some of you guys buy lots of trucks so I am glad you did not get this before I did! (only kidding).
