I don't know if I'll be able to get the WMO thing going without a little help. I need to make sure that the IP is timed right and go from there. I'm hoping that there is enough diesel mixed in with the gas to get it to start. I was thinking that I could siphon out as much as possible and dump fresh diesel in to dillute the gas and at least get it running. By the way, I just found out tonight that the truck's accual mileage is in fact just under 102,000 miles. This thing has spent most of it's life sitting parked. That could be why the body is so straight. It's just barely broke in.

it might be a little hard to siphon maybe a small hose will work but not sure. it is a good idea though, gas will absolutely wreck an ip if there isn't enough diesel or oil.

If he thinks it is out of time, that's when it's time to say "here's your sign". :)

I bet he took the gear housing off with it.

Your question about timing remains unanswered, I think. If the PO got it out of time, that needs to be addressed too. The initial timing effort is just to get it pretty close, get it running so it can be timed more accurately.

I copied instructions from Ziggster40, over on the 'other site' (TDS) 4 1/2 years ago. I'll see if I can paste them in here.

Ziggster40
I just remembered that on friday when I went over to visit Paul at DAS he mentioned to me a way to get the pump gear aligned once the cover has been removed that sounds a lot easier than screwing around with a flashlight and mirror on a stick and stuff.

What you do is lift off the injection pump cover and then the gear. Find the "y" mark at the bottom which points to the tooth that is supposed to align with a dot on the cam gear below(the one you can't see when it's assembled. From that tooth, you count up the gear towards the top on both sides 19 teeth. Put a mark on the 19th tooth on each side, then scribe a line between the two. This line will now run across the front of the gear, and be just above the deck when the gear is lowered into position. You can easily tell if it is out one tooth or not as the line will not be level with the top of the block. You can then lower the cover onto the gear all the while watching the mark to see it doesn't move. Too easy!!

Should look kinda like this.....pic here..

Hope that helps someone, I haven't tried it myself yet, but you can bet I will soon.

End pasted instructions

The picture didn't make it in the pasting. If you really need it I can email it. Of course, this is to be done after you get an acceptable mix in the tank.

EDIT

I found a copy of the picture. You can view it at Photobucket.

I have a feeling that the previous owner removed the cover and everything rather than removing the 2 cover bolts and the 3 bolts that hold the pump to the gear.

My next question is how do I know where to position the cam gear so that once I count the teeth and make a scribe line on the pump gear that I position it correctly? I might be making this a little harder than it really is, but I want to make sure that I do it right.

Punkmechanic mentioned turning the engine to TDC on #1 and seeing where the "pin" on the pump is sitting and then do the same with my correctly timed '86 and compare the pump positions. Do you guys think that would work? I'm running my batteries down to the parts store to get them charged up right now, so I'll check back here in a bit and see if anyone has replied back. Thank you guys for all your help.

I'm going to attach a electric fuel pump that I have to the inlet hose (from the tank) of the "lift" pump and pump the gas/diesel mixture out of the tanks. I figure that will work better than drinking the stuff trying to siphon.

I called Brattain International here in Bend and they're going to call me back with a price. They can take my IP and turn it so it's ready for cylinder 1 and then all I have to do is get the motor to TDC on #1 and set the pump right back on. I'm headed out right now to start draining the tanks and hopefully fire this baby up today. I'll keep everyone updated.

I'm hoping to get this up and ready for the NW gathering if a date gets set.

why don't you have them work you up a price on timing it too, but make sure they are using a meter and not just by ear though.

Don't forget to replace the fuel filter and fill it with diesel or Diesel Kleen before re-installing it.

might sound dumb but make sure you are TDC on the COMPRESSION stroke. i have seen more than on guy scratching his head for days wondering why his motor wont start because its 180 deg out. not that this ever happened to me.

I just pulled the IP and the passenger valve cover. I turned it over to TDC on the compression stroke and then went and did the same with my '86 that I know is in time. The IP gear on both trucks is sitting in the same spot on both. Should I change out the IP on the '85 with the one that I know works from my '86 and see if it fires? I'm heading to pick-up my batteries and get some fresh diesel to put in it. I still need to pump out the tanks before I try to start it. Any ideas on what else to try? Thanks.

have you really tried yet on this IP, i would get all the old fuel out purge the air and give it a whirl before condemning it. you dont have much to loose and it might work.

i would crank it for a bit to with the lines cracked to purge them out to.

i guess if the pump it truly shot i cant imagine the injectors arent far behind

I'm just going to use the good IP and injectors from my '86 and see what happens. I'm pumping the fuel out now, and going to blow air through the lines to clean them out. I have 7 gallons of new diesel and a new filter. I hope this works.

I'm at a loss to figure out why it won't start. I changed out the IP, injectors, lift pump, the line from the lift pump to the filter, and the lines from the IP to the injectors and she still won't start. The glow plugs are working, the injector has power to the solenoid on the top, and everything seems to be doing like it should. Does anyone have any suggestions that might get this truck to start? It seems to crank over a little slow even with fully charged batteries, so I was thinking that I'll pull the gear reduction starter off of the '86 and see if that helps with the cranking speed. I tried to give it a little squirt of starting fluid (I hated to, but thought it might help it out after not being started in so long) and it still didn't start. One time it sounded like it might, but that was it. I have the block heater plugged in tonight to see if warming up the block helps (I don't know if the block heater even works, but figured I'd try). Any suggestions or ideas are much appreciated. Thank you in advance for any advice.
