Need info on who to get IP from

I am trying to order an IP to replace one I think is weak on my 186k mile truck. Money is tight but I also want good quality.MWFI has one for $555 (yikes) but has the following warning.

How do I find the part number without pulling the pump? I am going to have my local big rig diesel mechnic install the pump so he can time it right.

The part numbers and such should be found on the side of the IP. The data plate will be on the passanger side of the pump.

Their warning seems a bit confusing to me, so I'll assume there's something we're not getting.

Not every IP is the same, automatic and manual trucks are a little different as are 6.9 vs 7.3 ones, etc. IIRC

The warning is because Stanadyne makes injector pumps for Ford, Chevy, and internationl tucks that I know of and a lot of them look exactly alike on the outside.

I got mine from Oregon Fuel Injection, Inc. and I have no complaints with their business practices or the pump which now has about 1K miles on it. Cost was $495 plus a refundable core charge of $250.

Additionally, apparently turbo and non turbo, 6.9 and 7.3 have slight differences. When I bought my IP from Oregon Fuel Injection, they had a $250 core charge on the 6.9 pumps and $400 core on the 7.3 turbo ones. I have no idea if they are actually different, but thats what they told me so I got the numbers off my pump and sent them to them so they could get me the right one. You should be able to either use a mirror to read them, or stick a little camera on macro mode with some careful lighting and be able to read them without removing the pump.

I have been happy with my OFI pump. Heard that Pensacola's quality was spotty, so decided to spend a little more and have more certainty of doing it right the first time.

Give this guy a call. They list a 7.3 pump for 245.00 but I have no idea what it is either. They seem to be a company that stands behind what they sell. Be cautious of DCP in Tenn. They have a prro rep with several members here. Read about them in the Hall of Shame forum above.

A lot of builders only will accept like cores for like pumps right down to the part #, some are far more flexible. I don't understand these pumps as well as some guys here do but in general, the 6.9 pumps have .0029" plungers and 7.3 pumps have .0031" plungers, also some slight diiferences in timing and fueling curves. Any competent builder can do just about anything with any DB2 pump but then you can get into machining and more intricate work which costs money, not something big builders like MWFI want to get into. That having been said, if you aren't absolutely sure what you have or what you want it might be best to go to Stanadyne's website and find a few local pump builders. Most of these local shops tend to be pretty good and their prices tend to be no more than MWFI. I don't know if Uhaul's website still has injection pumps but they are clearing out all NOS IDI inventory and as such have competitive prices and no core charges. Despite the slight differences I mentioned in the 6.9 and 7.3 pumps I wouldn't hesitate to use either one in any application. The only truly special pumps for a 6.9/7.3 that I know about come from Ken at DPS and Mel and his "Moose" partners here at Oilburners. They also offer stock pumps. I don't think a Baby Moose through Mel or a stocker through Ken would be a mistake. It doesn't sound like you have a turbo or other extensive engine mods, if that's the case you are better off without a DPS turbo cal or Moose Pump. My first two looks would be to Uhaul or your local authorized Stanadyne shop. Any shop can and will hit you with these core charges if you order something specific and don't have a like core to swap. When I turbo'd my truck and susequently blew out the IP, I found that out the hard way. Both my local pump builders were very reasonable on price and good to deal with but I asked specifically for the 7.3 pump and my 6,9 old style core was rejected and I would have been out about $150 but Towcat was nice enough to sell me a core reasonably priced so I could cut my losses....the 6,9 core was subsequently returned to mea as a bag of parts/discussion piece/paperweight .

and it worked out great. I think you can send them your pump and they will rebuild it for less than $300. I am not sure if anyone else has used DCP but I had good luck with them and they were the cheapest I could find.

and it worked out great. I think you can send them your pump and they will rebuild it for less than $300. I am not sure if anyone else has used DCP but I had good luck with them and they were the cheapest I could find.
