92 F250 IDI with E4OD-Tach was intermittent & then stopped completely. Checked the cam sensor with volts & ohms, both tested good. Also tried new cam sensor, didn't fix the problem. Have traced continuity from cam sensor all the way to the gauge cluster, verified all the wires are intact. Cleaned all the fire wall connections, put them back together. Cleaned the plug/harness on the side of the tranny, nothing. Replaced tach in the gauge cluster, still doesn't work. Replaced TECA relay, still no joy.

Two things I'm finding are that: a) I have constant 12 volts on the signal wire of the tach (not sure it's supposed to be that way, isn't it supposed to vary based on RPMs?) and; b) when we put everything back together my "overdrive off" light is constantly on & dim, which it wasn't before. I'm at a loss.....suggestions???????

Don't remember which it is exactly offhand but its a 20 Amp Maxi. My fuel heater blew 3 before I figured out that is what was causing it and unplugged it. It's labeled in your IDI handbook. I can look it up for you if you don't have that.

I should have added, checked all the fuses one by one visually and across the the tops with a meter. I may check them all again in the morning though just to be double sure, this is driving me insane

My problems have, so far, firmed out to be the simplest things, fuses and O rings mainly. Stupidly, the fuel heater is tied into the same fuse as the TCM. Now, my truck had no power when my TCM fuse blew, and well, along with no tach reading and a dim, constant O/D light.
I feel ya, brother, I am waging a massive battle with my E4OD and have been since I got the truck. lol

I resurrected this truck after it sat for about 5 years, and have chased a lot of little ghosts trying to get it back into shape. This one has me so perplexed I'm almost ready to throw in the towel. The worst part is that it started as just the tach not working, then went to the dim OD light, limp mode, etc AFTER cleaning all the connections and chasing wires all day

I have gone through hell due to bad/dirty/brittle harness connectors, that plug into the top of the solenoid pack. This is on the passenger side of the trans, above the pan. You kind of have to reach around and feel for it. Sometimes there is a tin foil looking heat wrap around it. It may not be your issue but I always feel right to remind folks of this possible trouble area..

You can in fact by replacement plugs (can't remember where from at the moment) which makes life much much easier.

I concur. I am off the opinion anyone buying an E4OD truck should do this immediately regardless of problems or none. I Gabe not done this and I feel very confident is the cause of my battle

We really do not need the fuel heater no matter what the climate you drive in. Its been posted Ford neglected to explain the proper use of the heater. We are supposed to turn on the ignition and let the truck sit for something like 15 minutes before we attempt cranking. Now who does that. I sure never have. Living on the west coast tells me we don't need a fuel heater. Next o ring leak and mine is a gonner thats for sure..

Especially if you have a modicrum of preparation and a block heater to plug in. Mine is still on there because I found an O ring that is working. Likewise, I will probably plug it next time I have an issue.

When you say "Cam Sensor" I hope your referring to the "Tach Sensor" that is mounted on the IP gear cover.

Here is a tach diagram, but it's for an 89, I don't think they are much different than a 92. Be sure you have the O'ring on the sensor when installed.

Yes sir, the tach sensor on the IP cover is the one I was talking about.

Thank you guys for all of the suggestions. I rechecked fuses this morning and everything seems to be in working order. When I get home later I'm going to check the plugs again and see if maybe there's an issue there. I'm praying that that's all it is, I've got to get this sorted out so we can have two vehicles again.

Well, a small update. The dim OD light/transmission issue turned out to be the diode that is in the fuse panel under the hood. $9 from Ford and it's back to normal. I still don't have a tach, replaced the sensor in the IP cover again just to double check that, and am no at a total loss for that issue.

The strangest part is that, unless I don't understand it, it doesn't seem to be putting the truck into limp mode. It still shifts through all the gears, including OD, and I can toggle the "OD Off" button normally (light just doesn't work because it's blinking.
