At this point is it worth going to a stand alone unit for the E40D? Seems like when a the E40D works good people are ok with them.
At this point, that's what I'd do if I was going to run a E4OD. I like them as long as everything works.

I'm certainly debating the standalone for my dads truck build. Seems like the electronics are starting to get finickey and harder/rarer to fix.

I haven't researched it, but I think that you also get new wiring with a stand alone controller. That's a bonus over 30+ year old wiring any day!

Slow reply, was in Mexico all last week.

I would need to rebuild my E4OD if I were going the controller direction. I do have a NOS set of shift solenoids on the shelf already. I may go that route. But another roughly $800 on top of that, rather go the manual swap route.

I should preface this next statement that I have 3 running driving vehicles. Two of which have a manual transmission (Wide ration NP435 and close ratio T19) and my other is a C6. The E40D may have it's issues but clutch linkages go bad, just like the knees that push the clutch...

Here are some specific examples of knee replacement costs:

    • Medicare: Average out-of-pocket cost: $2,000 to $3,000
    • Private Insurance: Average out-of-pocket cost: $5,000 to $10,000
    • Hospital Stay: Average cost: $10,000 to $30,000
    • Implant: Average cost: $1,000 to $12,000

Okay to cut to the chase. I have used 2 different tach sensors, my old one and a brand new one, and get the same results.

Description of the problem, when cold, my tach does not work. The transmission (E4OD) stays in "what the hell" mode and I have to manually shift it down to 1st every time I take off from a stop.

After driving the truck for about 15 minutes on the highway, tach comes on and all is good again.

It is very consistent. I drove this truck the same 50 mile distance 5 days in a row and the tach woke up within about a half mile of the same spot every time.

Since it acts identically with 2 different sensors, I am looking at the wiring. So far I have traced the wiring all the way to the firewall connector and both wires are showing 0.1 ohms resistance at the connector. I cannot find a wiring diagram for this circuit at the moment but the pics are the 1st and 3rd rows, 4th from the top.

Edit. Realized the plug goes into the TCM. So maybe a Bad TCM then.

Anyone ever experienced this issue? What was the solution if so?

Thanks
I have a similar issue tho I have a manual I’ve found it for some reason corresponds to the temp of my engine
