How many miles you got on the Moose GV? How many towing? Have you ever experienced overheating problems while coasting/braking on long hills? How about rear bushing failure?

Been reading as much as I can on the GV before I purchase. Will the GV last 200-300K with 50% of time towing 12K?

I've had zero (0) That's Z with an O around it, problems with the GV unit since I got it. I change the oil in it about twice as often as they recommend. I got it in 96 or 97 I forget which, and it probably has 25K on it, a lot of which is towing the 2 ton boat. It's been over the alleghenies a number of times, and some long runs on I-81. Lots of hills here in PA, so almost every trip out sees OD use up and down hills. I've made it a policy to not decel in OD in any gear other than 4th, so usually when I'm engine braking it's 1:1. No bushing failures, and no overheating problems. Fluid always looks real good when I drain it, and clutch material collecting on the drain magnet is far less than you would see in an Automatic trans during regular changes. If you read the GV web site, they would have you believe these things are virtually indestructable, which so far, I'd have to say they are. Every now and then I'll bang a gear on it and it holds up every time. My wife will be punishing the used one I just put in the Lady Moose until she gets the hang of it. If I could fit one under this Bronco I want to build, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

I've had mine for a little over a year an a half, put 34,000 miles on it carrying 1000 lbs in the back all the time. I live in very hilly area. I have pulled camper into WV numerous times and to Maine twice. Camper only weights about 3000 lbs.

So far the only problems I have had are: 1. The light just burned out that tells you it is operating. (bought new light) 2. It has dropped out twice in that time. (I have a bend in the speedo cable that is a little too tight, no other way to run it and if it catches it drops out.) I just ordered a new one for $11.

The second time it dropped out, I pulled it and put a tiny amount of grease on it, but it felt stiff so that is why I ordered a new 18 inch piece.

I never use it to brake except for 4th, and I hit the clutch to shift up or down. I have talked to guys who say they never clutch it, just bang it in and out, but one of those guys admitted to replacing his at 100,000 miles. I have experimented with no clutch, and at some speeds it will slip in and out pretty smooth. Going up at about 35 no pedal it will go in smooth, going down at about 35 it is the same, but you actually have to be giving it a little pedal or it will bump. That was done in 4th only.

well,,,,,,,,,,,got a GV in my 97 drw. hoping to have many years of use from it. i too dont have od engaged when trying to hold back on a hill with exhaustbrake on especially. wld like to be able to use it towing 22,000gcw but i was told not to as temps get HOT. a friend had one behind a c6 and he said in od he wld quickly get over 280 on the temp guage so he'd switch to direct and temp wld cool off

i need to gauge my gv and wld like to figger a bigger resevoir as the capacity is poor. i imagine a remote resevoir with some good capacity and a pump to get the fluid to and from and sending it thru a trans cooler wld increase life of the unit if used towing heavy loads

so,,,,,,,,,,,,is the gl-4 still the best oil to use in the gv?

GV currently recommends 3 different oils for the GV. 2 Synthetics (1 Chrysler and 1 GM) and a GM Mineral Oil based rear axle lube. I have the part numbers at work and can post on Monday.

Thanks guys. Been reading some on the other site and some guys were getting down ******* the GV. Thought I should get more scoop from actual owners.

The cooler idea and needle bearings vs bushing in the rear were 2 main areas of concern.

Don,

I havent had any problem with my GV. I have no idea how may miles it has on it gut I do know that it has been with the truck for a LONG time. The truck has over 300K on it now. I have put about 40K on it.

I changed the oil last fall for the first time since owning it.

It is a good unit!
