I work in hydraulics and it is not uncommon for us to put a couple of large magnets near the return side of the hydraulic reservoir, typically opposite of the suction side of the tank, in order to trap any metallic pieces from entering the suction loop on the pump. Anyone have any thoughts on putting one in my front tank while I have the sending unit out? Normally I would just go ahead and do it, however, I don't have that much experience with deisel fuel and I had some concerns of chemical attack as my plastic float is pretty crispy (anybody have a part number for a brass replacement float?).

Thanks

I don't know about a chemical reaction but usually I try to be careful and let the fuel filter to its job if any metal shaving makes its way to the tank.

I don't think it would hurt anything, but if a piece of metal did get sucked up somehow, it would be interesting to think of what might happen if the particle was magnatized.
