Gas in the tank...

Hey all,

To make a long story short, my wife accidentally put gasoline in the rear tank of my 1990 f250 7.3idi. We were moving both of the trucks and she doesn't drive standard transmissions so I was driving the Chevy and she was in the Ford.

Fortunately, I noticed it before she was done fueling, and the truck didn't get started. I switched to the front tank and filled it with diesel, and she fired right up and ran great for the 70 or so miles we had to do today. No problems.

So now I get to drop the rear tank and drain it and clean it out. No big deal but the question is, should I replace the pump in the rear tank, or will it be fine? Again, it hasn't actually pulled any gas, but it's definitely submerged in gas.

Just want to be sure I don't end up with problems if I don't replace the rear tank fuel pump.

Until then, I'll be taping the tank selector switch (which I told my wife is now the kill switch and not to touch it). And maybe find some stickers to put on the gas cap doors that say 'DIESEL FUEL ONLY'

That little bit of gas shouldn't hurt it at all. I wouldn't even drop the tank. just siphon most of it out and fill it with diesel. these old diesels wont care. my brother accidently filled his sportsmobile with a 6.0 with gas coming off a 72hour shift as a fireman. the dealership didn't do anything except drain the tank and fill it with diesel and tell him to run it. And he had driven it 20 or so feet and those motors are way more picky about fuel than ours.

Aren't several here using RUG to thin WMO used as fuel?

RUG - Regular Unleaded Gasoline
WMO - Waste Motor Oil

these trucks dont have a intank pump.
i also wouldnt drop the tank.
i would switch to the rear tank, pull the fuel line off the mechanical pump, and install a electric pump.
then drain.
the filler necks have a vent tube inside the filler neck that makes it a beach to put a siphon tube down into

This is true, so don't throw the gas away. Donate it to your WMO buddy, or use it to kill fire ant hills.

Thanks for the input everyone. gnathv, I think about 5 gallons of gas went in before I noticed and got the pump shut off

Drain tank at switching valve, add 1 gallon diesel, drain again, refill and forget about it. All you need to do.

The first time I filled up at a Sinclare gas station in South Dakota I grabbed the green pump handle and pumped 3 gallons of gas in my half full rear tank when I realized both handles on the pump were green. I fineshed filling up with diesel and other than a drop in miles per gallon the truck ran fine.

Something to keep in mind when doing that, gasoline will not act as a lubricant for the pump and injectors, so it will cause excess wear. Personally I would never run it with wrong fuel like that.

There's only 2 ways to get rid of fire ants. #1- the fast way.......@a quart of gas #2- the slow way- taking a shovel full of dirt and ants from one mound and put it on another. They laugh at everything else.
