here is a severly worn timing gear cover. paper thin in spots

Sure is a great pic of what cavitation does to steel. I personally have never seen this type of degradation to this plate.

Oil cooler O-rings are a good maintenance item at this point anyway. Interested to see what you guys come up with.

Ok so changed the cooler orings. They were shot. They were extremely hard and when we separated the ends they fell apart. Cleaned up and painted the cooler installed everything. No more water. I didn't think the cooler could leak that much water but it can. Weird thing is the coolant has zero oil in it. We went ahead and flushed everything. I'm guessing it let go after the drive there and back to Florida. He got lucky.

Well sure glad you fixed this problem. Sure feels good to know you found the way too. Funny how a rubber o ring can change composition like they do....

I feel like a rebel having playing a role in this international gambling ring.

It surprised me to see how brittle those oring had become. I could squeeze and roll them in my fingers and watched the dust fall.

Do you feel like Ace Rothstein in Casino? Glad it worked out for you, I love keeping a high mileage rig on the road for the price of some orings and a little elbow grease ;Sweet

Damn...looks like I'm mailing a toonie, now PM me yer address...rofl!

Don't worry Al: we'll find something to go double or nothing on. If you end up owing me four Canadian dollars, I might make you mail it to me as that's like five bucks in the US of A

I just like the action, and toonies remind me of how much I like Canada. The two dollar coin, curling, peameal bacon....you guys got all the cool stuff up there :hail

"In the casino, the cardinal rule is to keep them playing, and keep them coming back. The longer they play, the more they lose. In the end, we get it all." Great movie BTW

And I agree that all it takes it a little elbow grease and some 9 dollar orings.

I am really thankful for this thread. Having a 7.3 IDI, I worry about cavitation. If I saw water in the oil, I would likely conclude that the block worm had done its worst, and the engine was toast.

Having read this thread, I will probably not jump to conclusions so quickly should i see water in the oil. ( And I have done O rings on the oil cooler in the past)
Thanks for posting---

I forgot to ask when we changed the orings. There were a few small metal flakes/shavings in a small pile when we took the oil cooler apart. Bad? Normal? Bypassed oil filter possibly? What to do? Any information is greatly appreciated.

I'm guessing the metal flakes were found in the front of the oil cooler header and not the back header. The oil comes in the front by the power steering pump area by the engine. The coolant comes in the back and flows out the front of the bundle. The oil flows up and down thru the bundle internally. The coolant flows thru the center of the bundle thru the tubes you see. Funny how this works. Can you say which end the flakes were found in...
