I have a buddy of mine who has an 84 GMC 6.2L with a banks sidewinder turbo on it will this turbo work on a 6.9? if it does ill buy it cause he wants it gone, i just want to see if its a good idea first

it's too small. I put a WG banks off a 7.3 IDI onto a 6.5 factory turbo setup and it woke up the truck. 10 psi at the touch of the throttle for a 6.5 isn't bad.

I think it might be the same turbocharger, but it won't actually bolt on to a 6.9.
I think the 6.2 has a side mounted turbo like the later 6.5s. If you could fab everything up yourself, then it probably would work.
I looked at the turbo in my dad's 6.5 and its at least as big as the one in my truck. From a standpoint of CFM, it should probably work well.
EDIT: well Towcat would know better than me, so I'll go with what he says.

does your dad have a factory turbo? it's about as castrated as the factory ford setup on the outlet. I have two of them and the 90deg bend right at the outlet will make anyone sick.

The downpipe?
The original one rusted out and I had to make a new one from scratch using 3" ss pipe and mandrel bent elbows. Worked great, but after installing it I realized that its an engineered shape to suppress exhaust noise almost like a muffler. We had to stuff some fire proof insulation against the floor to get the sound back to normal. My Dad is not the type that likes engine noise even if he did get a few extra ponies out of it.
The cast iron manifold on that side did seem to be a little restrictive though. Its been a few years, but I think there is a spot near the outlet of the cross over pipe where its very small. 1x1" comes to mind but its been a few years.
The size of the compressor in that thing is what caught me off guard though. Don't know how it compares to the banks setup for the 6.2

IIRC the cross overs were double walled units, and when they bent them some times the inner tube would get smashed down to almost nothing...but it looked fine from the outside...

I don't know the history of his truck, but I didn't find any double wall pipes there. I had to replace the cross over pipe too.

that would be a good idea as long as you have a deltagate mounted to it. It will easily overboost these motors.ill check with him and see what all he has. So i should keep looking then huh? what if i bought both and mounted both of them on on each side

and to think i just had a 86 chev cc with a 6.2 and banks turbo hauled off 2 months ago. towcat try getting ahold of bent and twisted towing in oakdale he said he might take the turbo setup off before sending the truck to picknpull

a deltagate is a wastegate that operates independently of the turbo. it bleeds off the overpressure from the pre turbo exhaust side and can dump to atmoshpere or back into the exhaust downstream of the turbo. it's much more efficient than any wastegate found on a turbo.
