hey guys this is my first post but iv been lurking on this site for awhile. i recently bought a 1988 f 350 extended cab of my father the truck has 22 400 kilometers on it right now. it does have an old banks turbo set up on it and has 5.13 gears unfortunatly its a c6 3 speed. i love the truck as its almost brand new but these gears are kidding me at 110 km an hour this thing revs at like 3400 rpm  i was thinking on a set of 3.90s any oppinions? and my second question is about my turbo setup it takes a reallly long time to spool. now i know the injection pump was turned up for the turbo but the truck will not roal and soot at all i realize lots of coal isnt that great and increases egts but is there anything i can do to give this rig a little more pep? any advice would be greatly appreciated and ill post pictures as soon as i get the truck all washed waxed and detailed this week thanks very much. colin

Turbo might need a rebuild ?

I would go to 4.10's or 3.90's but you would be better off converting to 5 speed or getting the over/under drive unit.

yeah definatly would love to go overdrive maybe next summer dont exactly have the cash. how much is a turbo rebuild or what would a new turbo cost? the turbo dcoes hit its peak 6 psi just does it a lot easier on the highway than backroads.

With that rear end /tranny combo, you won't be putting enough load on the thing to even build hardly any boost until you put a heavy load on it. You'll wind up and go through the gears before you could even get your foot hardly into it. Hook up to about a 6-8ooo lb trailer and see how it acts before going in to change anything. Chances are your old man already has it dialed in . If that 22400 is original and it hasn't been rolled over, then you have a brand new truck there ;Sweet

If you wasnt going to haul to heavy i would go like 3.55 or something, and ditch the slushbox or get a Overdrive unit,

Do you have a pyrometer, does it tell you there is room for the fuel to be cranked up? if so crank it up till it tells you to stop,

Yeah thanks for the advice guys I'll load up a trailer and go for a drive and see how it goesthetruck did have 44s on it before hence the gear. And for the pyro on the highway the max I see my pyro goes is like a 650 do I have any roo
To turn it up? I want to keep like a 3 90 or so gear the biggest load I'll pull is a 24 foot enclosed car trailer with my cobra in it to the race track. And yes the mileage is all original I have never seem a cleaner 88 up here

Were is the probe located? is it in the manifold? if not i highly recomend you moving it there, you get much more Accurate readings that way, do this, 1250 is the absolute max for very short time period

No it's not a dually it was a EEG cab but when my brother an I were born my dad bout a brand new extended cab and than switched the body on to the old frame and motor. It was a pretty extensive job I'll post pics this weekend. And I'll have to check the probe I'm at work right now and I can't remember So I guess I have a little room to turn the pump up? the truck hasn't been drivin for years I don't wana push to hard

Drive her easy for awhile, change all the fluids, then later you can ride her a little harder:sly

But really i wouldnt touch the fuel till i moved the probe to the manifold its so much more accurate there

A 24ft enclosed with a car in it is going to be a pretty healthy load on there. You might want to wait till you've made a run with it hitched up before cranking any fuel up. You are going to built a bunch more boost with that load on there and it is going to bring your egts up a pile as well. Those things can fake you out. I have a 32 ft enclosed car hauler and that sucker weighs in around 10k basically empty ( just 2 spare tires, spare brake drum and hub, winch and straps and a pallet inside ) throw a car in there and its up to 13-14k real fast.

I have been wondering something lately, when im grossing 12K or just running empty my max boost dont change, it only boost faster and the boost is higher at a much lower RPM but max boost is never higher:dunno

What kind of turbo do you have, if it's wastegated, then that is what will happen. It will peak out quick and once the wastegate opens, it can't build anymore. without adjusting the wastegate rod to stay closed longer. The OP has old style banks sidewinder listed on his, that is non wastegated unless I'm horrible mistaken, and will not build much boost at low rpm or unloaded, but when loaded and wound up will boost like crazy.

Mine is wastegated, the line is unplugged and blocked off so the wastegate shouldnt be opening right?

5.13's with a C6 would be h**l to drive on the highway. A gear swap is gonna cost over $1k, but it may be the simplest/easiest option. They make 3.73's for your truck, sounds like that might be what you're after.
