Hello,

having a '89 F-350 4x4 with the E4OD(defect) and having a 435 manual in the barn, I'm thinking to swap them, I'm wondering if that's just doable, or a total nogo?

And if you were planning a swap, what would be important to have / watch for in a manual box?

If you travel on long trips with the truck, you are going to miss the overdrive. You will need a bellhousing for the 4 speed to fit the diesel, the clutch/brake pedal assembly for under the dash, the large cover under the carpet so the shifter can go through, and a new front driveshaft and a rear driveshaft, the auto trans is a little bit longer than the 4 speed system. Of course you will need a flywheel and clutch for the 4 speed as well as the clutch master and slave. You should already have a hole in the firewall for the clutch master, mine had a cover plate since I had a c6 in mine.

For all the labour and pieces required to convert from E4OD to manual, I'd budget a little extra for a ZF 5 speed to have overdrive and close ratios. Fairly cheap trans to pickup used - unlike Getrags, NV4500s, and 6 speeds.

What’s the 435 out of? My 79 has one and it’s mechanical, not hydraulic. That could cause a big headache in the swap. By the time you spent money doing all the custom work, you could probably buy a zf5 donor truck and have OD

ZF5 is the way to go, it's much easier to get parts to do the swap.

Honestly though knowing your in France it may be more cost effective for you to call up Brian's truck shop or monster transmission and get another e4od. The time and effort finding parts, getting someone whose willing to ship international and the cost of shipping may be more of a headache than it's worth. Unless you can find a complete donor truck with everything you need in one shot, but still having to get it over seas and through customs and all the government bull....

I think it's worth looking around for one. You may stumble on a treasure trove. You just never know.
