The coolant filter should be run parallel to the heater hoses. The filter doesn't have enough flow to allow the coolant to run free though it. just T into the heater hose and run filter on a side line. It will still filter out the junk.

I understand what you are saying, but the instructions that came with it said to splice it straight into the line- either way, I need to know the direction of flow for the filter to work properly, ??no??

head to heater to water pump. Filter is to restricted to supply the heater.

Like Russ said, the water is sourced at the head. The water pump is the return. Look here for how it should be done.
