Is this a factory turbo setup?

I want to add a factory turbo to my NA 7.3. Since I've never seen one on a truck, I'm just wondering if I even bought an IDI turbo setup or if it's off a Powerstroke (or something else)... anyway it's mine now!

If this is the right hardware, I know I'll need a downpipe, was thinking about a Gale Banks one. And an air intake- probably a pipe to a Wix 46637 filter.

Any ideas?

Appears to be at least 90 percent of a factory turbo yes. And a positive note your intak snail has a larger boot on it already so that means you should do a intercooler at the same time! Cheap and easy

Thanks, that's reassuring... BTW I also have the left-side valve cover with the CDR hole, which isn't in the pic.

I think an intercooler is a bit more expense and complication than I need right now... not looking for huge boost or hp numbers since the rest of the engine is stock anyway.

I have read some on this retrofit and it looks like the GP controller needs to be relocated. What other turbo-specific parts do I need to make up the other 10%? Besides a downpipe of course.

It looks like it is missing the factory air intake plenum/air filter castings - see the attached pic of the factory turbo kit I installed on my N/A truck. It is the ********* aluminum casting that says "Ford Turbo" on it, and another aluminum "box" underneath that. If you are doing an IC and/or your own cold air intake set up, then you probably won't need the factory plenum castings.

Yep, the seller was supposed to provide a complete-to-nuts & bolts package, but obviously didn't. I did deduct some for the missing downpipe.

That big airbox really gets in the way of just about everything on top the engine and from what I've read, is not the best flowing either. I was planning on a straight pipe to a big cylindrical Wix filter crammed in there somewhere (I've already used the right inner fender space for the Facet electric fuel pump).

Yep, that is a true statement right there - that air box has to be removed to do just about anything on top of the motor. Fortunately, it is easy to remove and only takes about 5 minutes to do so.

That's good to know. I'd thought about buying a stock airbox too, but haven't been able to locate one. I guess they're all either on running trucks, or were discarded long ago in favor of an aftermarket setup?

Looks pretty close to the setup I ended up with (attached to a '94 7.3idi with a dead hole). You can get a turbo rebuild kit for cheap online, the Banks downpipe is available through Conestoga Diesel Injection. The turbo passenger side valve cover has a spot to mount the later style GP controller (that uses ZD9 glow plugs instead of ZD1). Or just switch to a manual push button and problem solved.

What intercoolers are folks stuffing in? 7.3? 6.0? Been debating on going that route when I finally get the time to install my setup.

Looks to be fairly complete, the boot on the intake hat doesn’t go there, it’s the boot for the inducer on the turbo. Make sure the o ring is inside the inlet of the intake hat, that’s a commonly missed one. Looks like you have the o ring for the back of the intake manifold, make sure that’s in good shape. You’ll need a bolt for the intake hat, a seal for the bolt head, the correct gasket to go under the intake hat and a v band for the downpipe. I sell a 3” downpipe and an intake kit for your truck as well as everything else you need to make your kit complete.

I have install seal kits, and a full bolt kit available. And the stock airbox flows great.
Also the boot on the snail is for the turbo inlet.
Your best bang for the buck is the banks upgrade downpipe.

I just noticed you probably dont have the oil line adapter for the factory line,
I also have the ATS style stainless teflon line kit also. Preferred IMO.

Since you're looking for ideas...here is what I did. I cut off the fuel filter mounting bracket and used the van fuel filter mount.
The aluminum piece between the air filter and the turbo is from a OBS 7.3 PowerStroke. It's a perfect fit, and it has the fitting for the CDR to connect to. I just blocked it off and went with a down draft tube.

Now I'm just waiting for the kits. And the time to bolt it all up!
