I shoved towels over the intake, the only thing I had around at the time. I wasn't prepared for it to do that. It took a little while but it did the job. I put a spare IP on today and got it to run for a few seconds before an air issue shut it back down. Looks like I diddnt hurt anything in the process, I was really nervous I had.
I had a thought though, in the case of a runaway, couldnt you unplug the FSS at the IP to shut it down?

No,unplugging that in a runaway will do nothing

When you make a mistake in the injection pump and a runaway occurs this happens... The pump govener is overridden so the rpm will continue to climb. The same thing happens when a person pours fuel or anything these motors can run on down the intake. No way of regulating the fuel supply. Years ago a member on the other site poured seafoam directly down the intake... It ranaway bad too... His description of him jumping down off the front of the truck and running as fast as his overalls would allow him to was just too funny... I think he said he messed his overalls because of the screeming motor way past its redline rpm... Never did hear if valve float hurt anything.. It did finally idle down after it ran out of the seafoam fuel.... Never pour anything down the intake... We have no way to shut down the fuel supply that way... Unless you thought ahead and have a small piece of wood to cover the intake. That will starve the motor of air... Most all oil field trucks have this idea so they can be shut down if they get a fuel source from the refinery like gas vapor or propane type fuels in the air... Refinerys have lost of this hazard...

Run away Detroit, funny story. Sold my GM bus to a guy in SanDiego, had to drive it from Ohio. Got a call 2 days later from Arizona saying the bus won't run, can only get 25 MPH out of it and it's really black smoking. They said we stopped at a rest stop and when we started backup it ran like that. Told them to stop, shut the engine down, go around to the engine and reset the air flapper that shuts air off and the engine down in a runaway case by hitting the Emergency Stop. They ran about 50 miles like that in 1st gear before calling. Moral of the story, don't mess with something if you don't know what your doing. The Emergency Stop was clearly marked with a lift up shield over the switch. Just goes to show a diesel will still run if they can get just a little air and fuel.

Always.... ALWAYS be prepared to shut off the air intake when doing ANY pump work! This includes installing a brand new Moose Pump, and I tell you so in the document that comes with it! You never know if something was damaged in shipping, or in your case, in your tinkering. Your real lucky you didn't blow it up.
