IP gear cover

What is the sensor for on the IP gear cover. I am swapping parts over to a 6.9 from a 7.3. Was wondering since i am replacing oil pan gasket is it possable to mark the ip gear and oil pump gear so i can put on the cover with the sensor

It is a tach sensor,and you can mark the gear, put the engine at tdc, and mark the IP pin location, make sure it goes in the same way. , use a straightedge across both covers to line up the marks ,to make them and align them.

Why are you removing the gear cover for the pan gasket... These engines do not have a oil pan gasket. The use rtv from the factory. Yes, you can buy a cork or rubber pan gasket but thats not correct and it will leak. The rtv will not leak. If you see a gasket then someone before you installed it because they felt it needed to be there. The front cover behind the water pump can be removed without removing the top injection pump gear cover. Thats the aluminum gear cover that the injection pump is connected to. Its also the cover your asking what the switch is for. You are going to need some special tools to remove the front engine plate. A dampner remover installer tool... A fan clutch nut set to remove the fan clutch.. A seal installer tool if you need to replace the front main seal. Usually that requires a sleeve be installed on the dampner because the seals wear a groove in it. If you find a groove in it and don't install a sleeve the new seal will die quickly. Hope this gives you some ideas as to what your about to do. Not trying to scare you but to inform you.

Have never worked on a diesel before all new to me. Oil pan has a small leak so i was going to replace the gasket. The ip gear cover did not know if i would need the cover with tach sensor or not. Trying to do all this before i install the engine Thanks for the replys

When I swapped the 6.9 (which originally had no tach) into my truck (which has a tach) I was able to just swap the sensor from one IP gear cover to the other. The 6.9 cover had a plug in it, just removed it and threaded the sensor in. No need to remove the gear cover.

the one i want to replace does not even have a spot for it. is there another way to hook up the tach? Thanks
