not sure what it is, replaced alt. checker lifetime warrantee 100amp. replaced fuselink by battery, redid both wires in top of alt, but dont know what this black thing is could this be my problem? need help!!!

Do you have a good ground to the alternator?

Do you have 12v going to the alt. ? "Ign" terminal.

yup, i found a broken spot in the top rear wire, repaired it and still nothing, could it have broken in more than one spot? i guess maybe i should just cut open the harness and start tracing wires so noone knows what that black rubber thing is?

Thats the fuseable link. They do burn out. Test both sides of it for voltage contenuity.

Ya jinxed me...My battery light came on this morning and stayed on....Time to troubleshoot my old beast after supper. I have a new voltage reg here and a few alternators that should/can fit with a little persuasion...
