It seems like one or two of you guys have done this? Am I correct? I don't want to convert to a serpentine belt system but I do think something needs to be done, there is way too much slop in it no matter how tight I think I have things. I'm due for some new belts and there is no time like the present to address the situation. If any of you have done so please let me know what you did. Thanks in advance!

I had a 6.2 that had an awful lot of slop in the belt when running; no matter how tight I made the belt there was a long run between the crank pulley and the alternator that had about 3" of play when the engine was running. Most was caused by vibrations in the engine - the trick to long belt life was installing belts designed for that use - the belt may have had wires in it - I can't remember but they weren't cheap.

There is another way to stop the flop... Use a shorter belt that doesn't reach the crank pulley. I have seen it done and it really helps. The belt goes around the waterpump and alternater only. So you don't have the long drive from the crank to the alternater which drops out most of the flop. Someone will post the belt number.

i found a dayco belt from advance a few weeks ago, it seems much stiffer than the gates i had previously. its ribbed on top, now i have issues with the belt rubbing on the vacuum pump pulley..(was there before, just noticed it now..) the old gates belt was actually squeeking so much that i thought it was a bad turbo/ps pump

13A1060 is the number, I use a Gates belt of the Green Stripe XL model, so far so good.

Also, check this out for ideas, this is from Snotzalot at TDS:

Thanks guys. I'm going to have to see if I already have the shorter belt or not. I know this one is pretty worn out for sure.

im glad i have found this, my alt belt flops around like a fish out of water. i also notice it when i first fire it up everything inside is really dim at idle for a while until i get it warmed up.

this should be in the archives...

Well that ain't right, when you first fire it up you're running off the high-idle, which is above the min alternator speed for charging. That's one of the reasons I have the high idle on a manual switch too, so I can run all them lights without draining the batteries. On a second thought, was it you who had the the high idle inop? It would all make sense then, as when the engine warms up nice it idles a bit higher than when tis all cold...
