Idle speed changed today

Had the truck about 6-7 weeks. The idle has been higher when cold (1,000ish) and lower (450-500) when warm.

This morning it behaved fine. After work the warm idle has been 700. In searching the forums I see 650-700 is actually the norm. Still, something happened...? I'll see what happens from cold tomorrow.

The return lines and glow plugs were replaced a few years ago. The fuel filter was replaced in 2010. The Injectors and Injector pump are original.

I looked at the linkage etc tonight and see nothing obviously wrong.

If that fuel filter has been on for 4 years....change it, fill it with ATF when you do and that may clear up and gunk in the pump. And go from there.

Change the fuel filter after 4 years? I found the paperwork and it's actually been 7 years since it was changes. But it's only gone 15k miles, whereas Ford calls for replacing ever 60k miles? I'm fine with good preventative maintenance, would just like to understand.

Will be heading out in a bit and see how it acts, and update tonight.

Filters are easy. Get that out of the diagnostic equation.

The filter has paper inside it. The paper can get brittle and break which will allow dirt to get into the pump and injectors. IMO 60K is too long for the fuel filter,7 years is way past due.

I feel a year is about long enough for a fuel filter. Let that media break down and your going to be installing a pump cause the micro passages in the pump will be plugged up. Hell if your waiting 7 years might as well instal a Fram filter.

Well it behaved normal today, no higher idle cold or warm. I bought a new filter and trans fluid on the way home, plan to install tomorrow.

If ur in a cold state make sure it's warm if u try to start it on Trans fluid mine didnt like it at 50degs outside.

If what you are saying is that it is idling higher when the engine is cold in colder temps......that is what it is supposed to do. These engines have a high idle/cold advance. When the temp gets lower they advance the timing to aid in starting and hold a higher idle to warm things up.

Replaced the filter Saturday, the old one didn't look dirty or clogged etc. The cold and warm idle seems to be acting normal so far. So hopefully if there was an issue, the filter addressed it.

And yes, I'm familiar with how cold and warm idle is supposed to behave. In this instance the warm idle was ~200 or so higher than it has been for the last several weeks.

On fuel filter I would say every year or 15k miles. Whichever is first.
