Hydro boost conversion

Hi I got a hydro boost,steering pump, lines and master cyl from a f450 diesel and installed them in my 1988 f350 DRW 4X4 deisel. I put a new master cyl in and the rest of the above listed parts. I notice that when I hold the brakes on I lose boost to the power steering. Any ideas on where to look. Thanks Richard

the pump you got off the 450 is apparently weak. Use your f350 pump, and the resevoir from the 450 and you may have enough pressure that you wont have a problem.

This might be a sign that the pump is weak. Try a new pump or if that is not the issue, you could try the spring mod that MLSC did to raise the line pressure.

If all this and it still bugs you, contact Vanco Power Brake Systems and send them your hydroboost unit to mod it for more flow. That will be spendy, involve downtime, and should really not be required for a standard steering system.

Thanks for the quick responce guys. I have a new spare reservoir that I will put on my 350 pump. I thought I was doing good using the 450 pump because I had heard it put out more volume and/or pressure. Richard

same pump, just different res. if buying just the pump, they are all the same p/n. if buying the pump with the res already on it, then it has a differnet p/n.

also--i DONT know the size, but if you drill out the hole in the pressure line at the pump, it makes a world of diff. i just dont remember the size-----and it really helped the hydro boost systems, as they require more oil flow,esp when turning the steering at the same time as applying brakes--

Which hole is to be drilled, the one in the fitting that keeps the valve in place? You can also replace the spring behind the valve, a stiffer spring gives you more line pressure.

I have the same problem with my setup, I put the 450 pump on and it slowly died 3 days later. I bought an oring kit yesterday and swapped the resevoir to a new pump and it is a lot better. The only time I have problems is when Im standing on the brake pedal and trying to steer, then I run out of power going to the steering.

yes--and as i said--i dont remember the size--and you dont want to go tooo large, and have the fitting blow apart--pressure is nice---volume is farrrr better

I think at an idle with you foot on the brake and trying to turn the wheel, that is somewhat normal. I have limited power assist in my Ex and it is a factory hydroboost. Maybe Mel will chime in, he has as close to factory hydroboost on the Moose Truck you can get. I believe he bought all new parts from the Ford Dealer (Got the parts for and OBS F-Superduty).

I know that is a thing Nick warned me about when I converted, but I really can't say I have a problem with it. Yes, it is possible at idle to feel a loss of power steering if your really jerking around in a tight spot or something, but on the road it's no different then with vacuum. Of course, if you have a automatic, and your just idling that may not be as good as a manual doing a little engine braking which is keeping the R's up a little. I used my existing 100K+ mile pump and have no issues.
