What's the best variant of HX35 for the idi? There seems to be about 15 different versions used on the Cummins trucks.

The big difference I know of is that the early ones have 8 bladed compressors, while the later ones are 7. From what I've found, the 7 blade is rated for more flow (60 lb/min vs 52 lb/min) but there seems to be some thought that the 8 blade has better performance at lower boost. Then there's different exhaust housings, wg pressures and other stuff.

This is the info that I've been able to find for some units. Not sure how accurate it is though.

Anyone have any maps or real info?

There isn't a whole lot of info out there from what I have read. It is pretty hard to find the compressor maps for each of the different variations. There is a thread over at FTE that kinda was going into this topic and just turbos in general. I'll post a link to it. And for what its worth, most of the Cummins guys say that the 7 blade turbo is the preferred turbo but like you said the 8blade might perform better at lower boost levels. I have never heard this before but that is interesting.

Interesting info. Their conclusion seems to be that the HX35 really isn't a very good turbo for the IDI at all, yet it seems quiet a few folks have seen decent improvement with one. Interesting.....

I looked into a VGT, but the issue of optimal vane control is a pretty big stumbling block. I've been thinking about building a semi automatic control system for one but that's down the road. For the moment the plan is to go with the HX35 and then down the road maybe throw something different on there.

Why not just the turbo off a 7.3 powerstroke?

Just wandering. Someone here did a remote mount setup, and if IIRC, he was really happy with it.

there are better turbo's to use for the work involved in putting a 7.3L psd turbo on one of these engines. it has been done a few times though.

Jasper, i was more infereing that if......the HX35 is "a significant" improvement over our stock turbo's, and the maps for that turbo shows they are not that good, then think of how good(more like "bad") the bolt on turbo kits are for these engines. yeah the are way better than running n/a, but if you are gonna pay close to $2k for a new banks kit then why not spend that money on a GOOD idi a3k kit?

as far as i know there are 2 VGT's(HE351VE's) on idi's. both are working good from what the users have reported. there is a guy on CL near me that said he will trade an ATS 6.9/7.3L idi turbo for his HE351VE.....and i just got a new turbo, before i saw that add LOL.

Ah now I'm sniffing what you're ********.
Definitely for the price, might as well do the new a3k setup.
I also agree that the main or should I say "old" options for turbos is crappy. Albeit still better than n/a like you said. But I wander how many of the headgasket problems come from too small of a exhaust housing (drive pressure?), not "high boost." I don't know, no point in going into that. Lol

Was it the turbo on your truck that you traded?
I'd like to see what/how you do with it.
Fair trade, IMO.

Lol. Had me all giddy thinking I was gonna get to see a new build. Lol
Oh well. Maybe I'll put one on my powerstroke. Or do a compound setup with the hx55(pretty sure that's what it is, going by the model number) I have stored in my desk drawer. Haha
