how to fix volt meter on dash?

the voltage meter (voltometer?) on the dash does not work on my 89 f250 - does anyone know how to fix these? i assume the problem is with the sending unit/sensor or whatever it is called - does anyone know where it is located and how to tell if it is working or not? or maybe the problem really is at the meter on the dash - if so, how to tell?

Well the one on my '86 is an ampmeter, and it is just there to fill a hole in the instrument cluster (like the water temp and oil pressure gauge). It has never moved and I'm sure it never will. My advice is to get a Autometer, Isspro, Stewart Warner, VDO, or whatever brand you prefer..........voltmeter. That way you know what is really going on with your charging system. I've never see a truely functional ampmeter in these vintage trucks. Other than replacing it with a better aftermarket gauge, I don't know it can be fixed.

All of the gauges are considered modular in the dash. Each can be individually replaced. You would just need to source a spare and put it in. If the other gauges are working, then the cluster obviously has power, so no doubt the gauge is at fault. As was already stated though, remember that the factory gauges are just to fill holes and look cool. I wouldn't count on them for accurate information.
