How to check the cruise control and how does it work

Hello, Per my previous thread, I blocked off the vacuum line going to a canister below the vacuum port and lo and behold, now it appears that my cruise control works. However, it takes a long time to set and it seems to not be holding the set speed. Can someone tell me how it works and what I can do to check the componants to see what other problems I might have.
I sometimes drive long distances and it has always been nice to have cruise control and not having it for the last 8 months has been a real pain.
