How Many Trucks Had An IDI....

So as I was looking at the Nappa parts for our trucks I found out how many trucks is every year were made with an idi in them.
1983 had 29%
1984 had 39%
1985 had 43%
1986 had 44%
1987 had 39%
1988 had 39%
1989 had 40%
1990 had 52%
1991 had 49%
1992 had 53%
1993 had 49%
1994 non turbo had 13%
1994 turbo had 23%.

Interesting statistics. I wonder how accurate they are, and where the data came from.

I could believe that since I rarely see any other 94 turbos out there. About as many as I see 83 w/6.9

Actually I know I do. I couldnt believe that I'd found two other 83's after we rolled grandpas truck, and then to find my dads project 94 CC just sitting in barn, and then my brothers 94 single cab (same color as dads CC, and same color combo as grandpas 83). I mean what are the odds of that! The hardest 94 turbo truck to find that we have in our possession is my moms green CC, that took (no kidding) YEARS to find. And we drove all the way to Texas for it. The others were just chance and I guess good luck in finding them.

The sad part thinking about those statistics, is trying to figure out how many are still driving today.

All of them are still on the road today but as a Hunydi or some other pos from over there....

Hi 6 Nebraska IDI's - which is rarer? A '94 IDI non-turbo or a '94 IDI Turbo? I have a -94 IDI Non-turbo that I looked ----just like you---- for a long time to find, and I ended up getting mine in Texas too. At the time I didn't know anything except I wanted a diesel with no rust. That I ended up with a crew cab and a non-turbo was just chance... Is there anything more or less desireable about the non-turbo IDI at the end of its run?? --Andy

The non turbo in 94 or turbo truck is still up for debate. I read some information about the turbo block having a 110 thousands wider main web but have never been able to support this. First off where do I measure from. All the 6.9 and 7.3 motors use the same main bearings so thats not it. They also use the same cranks and cams. Many internal parts cross between both motors. The turbo motors did have an upgraded oil cooler with more fins per inch. I understand that is the norm now. The heads have an inconel exhaust valve where the non turbo motors did not get this upgrade. We can do it now to any 6.9 or 7.3 head but it will cost about $300.00 for the valves. There really isn't any good or bad reason for buying a truck or motor from the end of the run either. The turbo didn't add much to the motor at all. They squished down the down pipe from the turbo so it has lots of back pressure and in 94 Ford was promoting the newer psd line so they didn't want buyers looking "backwards" in Fords minds. I'm still looking for a true turbo block so I can measure this main web thing. Even a windowed block can be used for this. The block serial numbers have to be from 1,116,331 and up from there. The block casting number is 10809000C3. The non turbo block casting number is 10809000C1 if anybody needs to know. Even if you have a true turbo block with a factory turbo on it you need to remove a piston to see if it has the larger 33mm pins. The non turbo pistons have a 28mm pin.

Hey, I have two turbo motors sitting in my garage right now, one is completely torn down and on a stand. I will also be pulling my 6.9 in my brown truck soon. I wonder if I can measure some things for you???? Might as well eh? Lets get this figured out, so its not so much of a dark area.

Andy, odds are you have a turbo engine in that truck, but they just didnt put the turbocharger on it. I have one true turbo engine in the garage right now that is in fact a turbo engine, but it was in a N/A truck. Its possible that it is not, but odds are on your side that it is after they started putting turbo engines in all trucks regardless of if they came with a turbo or not.

do you think ford would do that. i know that they would hodge podge parts together to get rid of them, but you would think factory turbo motor, with its upgrades would cost too much to just throw into anything. i would think it it would be like chevy throwing in a leftover 70 ls6 454 into a 71 chevelle as it went down the line, just because they had one lying around.

I guess I dont know for sure, but from this engine i have sitting in the shop, and my experience, is that after a certain date all that rolled out the door were turbo motors, whether they were equipped with a turbo or not.
