How low to run tank with broke shower head

Pretty much what the title says. After I had first gotten the truck I ran the front tank low but I can't remember how low, and sucked air and had a mess. Although I had a leaking line from the lift pump, and return line issues and a cracked hard line so I'm sure that helped the fuel to drain back to the tank.

Now that all of that is fixed, I'm wondering how low I'd be safe running that front tank and not having any issues. Back tank I've ran to an 1/8th and had no issues so I know it's good. Would you guys think as long as I keep it above 1/4 of a tank it won't matter?

For me, I wouldn't go much lower than half.

Haha I'm past that unfortunately but not by much. I'll switch over to the rear tank then. Might be time to just get a new tank for the front anyways. It looks a bit suspect in comparison to the rear tank which has definitely been replaced at one point.

Is the front metal?
Could just pull the sender and add some hose.

The fuel hose pick up mod is to easy to do not to do it. Took me 4-5 hours on a Saturday to drop both tanks and extend the hard line with fuel hose about a 1/4 in off the bottom of the tanks and put the tanks back in.
A lot of guys here insist on removing the bed to do this but dropping the tanks imo was much faster than messing with the bed bolts but each there own opinion. I was on my own also so pulling the bed was out of the question.

I run my front tank to 1/4 and switch if I go much further it will start surging, "out of gas". When I fill it up , it will hold about 12 gallons so it still have about 7 gallons I can't get too.

Excellent argument for installing an electric fuel pump.. Re-prime the fuel system by flipping key on/pump on.. bleed air out at schrader valve at the filter... crank engine..

Grief factor is much shorter than cranking the engine to run mechanical pump till you get fuel pumped to IP after you run dry...

is there a official write up on how to drop your tanks by yourself? I'm going to need to do this, probably this summer and it would help a lot. I've read a bit about it and it seems like there is a couple ways guys like to go about this. The only reason i'm not offering to write one is because i'm certain I do not know enough to do so.

Ive tapped the red marker many times....on both tanks.....ya its how I roll....

Az a matter of fact I actually ran outta fuel thurs eve...pulled up to gas station 7 11...and yup...no fuel just gas.......ok up into box...grab my 5er of fuel and my funnel and fuel away....

Now I know my bottom line.

Just sayin

5er is already refilled and both tanks topped up...along with a couple gallons of gas in two small gerrys for those who run out on the road.......

Oh if u got broken shower head..just above 1/4 I suppose would be as low as I would go...

I just run till I run out of fuel then hit the switch to switch to the other tank

If you have a good stout tree with a large limb, cut a couple of 2x4's the bed width, nail a couple of by 4's between them so they don't come together, with a comealong lift it up, drive the truck out from under it.

I once tried to push my luck and go lower on the front tank, Stalled on a slight hill in the middle of the highway during rush hour.... Thankfully had fuel I the rear, switch, cranked, drove away....never made that mistake again...

Yeah, that is the problem with the long, narrow (front to back) front tank. The fuel has a lot of area to slosh fore and aft uncovering the pickup. Point the truck uphill or downhill with not much fuel in the front tank (or a broken off showerhead) and the truck starts sucking air. The rear tank, by its more "squarish" shape, keeps the fuel around the pickup better. After I fixed the showerheads, the rear tank will empty nearly completely. The front tank, though, always has about 2 gallons left in it after I switch to the rear when I start to feel the "surging".

Well you may want to stop drawing off a tank at 1/4 level on the dash gauge if you know the shower heads are broken off. I used to "push my luck" and run dry but only on the freeways. Then I kept my foot on the throttle so the E4OD would stay locked up. Switch tanks and waited for the engine lift pump to prime and run well again. Well one time that did not happen so I quit doing that run till it was dry idea. Finally installed the electric lift pump and harpooned the tanks plus fixed the shower heads. If I want to run past 1 /4 tank now.. I can with not issues. But usually will run till the 1/4 mark and switch. Why push my luck.
