Looks like I'm shopping for a new (used) zf5 for my 91 F250 7.3

I've seen some advertised but is there anything (numbers?) on the outside of the trans that identifies whether it is a gasser or diesel? and is there a site to check out the numbers?

I don't want to go to the trouble of putting in a trans just to find out someone sold me a gasser trans.....I could end up in jail.....:backoff

The diesel trans doesn't have starter boltholes on the bellhousing.

^^^Thats probably the easiest way to tell them apart. They also have a large cut out at the bottom of the bell housing that is closed off by a bolt on sheet metal access cover. All gasser bellhousings have one solid face of mating surface all the way around.

Once you look for those two details, they are very easy to spot.

The E4OD that I got was originally from a 460 and it didn't have the cutout (had to replace the case to use behind my diesel). Maybe they did things differently on the ZF?

I found this on the ZF web site. The second column shows Zf part numbers that will fit behind a diesel.
