How did my shaft get too short?

I got all the parts cleaned/replaced (Whichever was needed) to get the hob/rotor back on, after the ball joint replacement. I repacked the bearings and installed the inner spindle nut. I torqued it to 50ft lbs, backed it off, re-torqued it to 35ft lbs and then backed it off again. I then tightened it enough, to get any slop out of the hub/rotor. When I put the lock washer in, the pin was between two of the holes. I backed the spindle nut just enough, to allow it to go in the next hole. I put the outer spindle nut on and torqued it to about 65ft lbs.

I slid the hub lock assembly in and got the retaining ring into the groove, inside the hub. When I went to put the snap ring around the axle stub shaft, I noticed that the groove for it wasn't visible. The hub lock assembly is fully seated inside the hub.

Could it be something as simple as pushing the shaft further through, from the other side?(I didn't even think to try that, while I was out there.) Or is it something else?

Yep, stick your hane behind the spindle and just pull it out. There should be enogh play in the stub shaft in to get your snap ring on. The V ring betwen the stub shaft and the spinle can cause a good fight. There is actually quite a bit of play there to get it together.

yup just as ken said reach in a push the axle out so you can get the snap ring on it.if you cant do it by hand a little pressure with a pry bar will pop it right out where it needs to be.

After you finish torquing the inner spindle nut, and you go to put the washer on, if it doesnt line up, flip the washer over. They are designed so the it will be offset slightly so that no matter where the inner spindle nut is, you wont have to adjust it to make the washer fit.

Well anyway... I reached behind the rotor and pulled the shaft out far enough to get the snap ring on. I also put new brake pads on the thing. Even after compressing the caliper pistons back, I've still never had a set of pads fit that tight. Oh well, I guess they'll wear down..

Sounds like you have a bad brake hose thats keeping pressure on the pads. Crack the bleeder loose and see if it can be compressed more. If so and it starts spinning freely the hose is your problem.

Also just a thought, are your wheel bearings too tight? Does the hub/rotor spin freely until the caliper is put on?
