How bad is the HG job on a 7.3 IDI?

Second photo is the AC condenser. If it didn't work prior, I wouldn't sweat it.

As for the oil cooler, I respect the ingenuity lol but otherwise nah sometimes they are just a bear to put together.

AC works great and we get really hot summers here so def will be replacing. More than likely there's a leak there.

How clean are we supposed to get these? Obviously remove all the old gasket but does the carbon build up need to go too?

Trying to get this cooler reassembled but it's not cooperating any other tips here?

It appears that the lower cap isn't square with the tube. That's why it won't go.

Obviously remove all the old gasket but does the carbon build up need to go too?

I like to remove it.
If you leave your PS pump and bracket where it is, you'll probably damage that when you're installing the engine. Just a little heads up.

You don't need to clean the combustion surface or the valves, just the fire ring areas and head gasket surfaces and you'll be fine.

Update - got the valve positive clamping stem seals in, these differ in shape from the stock seals and are all the same profile (https://classicdieseldesigns.com/pr...eal-set-x20-seals?_pos=1&_sid=ec347403e&_ss=r) anyone else use these?


Getting the oil cooler back together was a massive PITA, decided to take it to a machine shop with a press and they got it done in a few seconds.

Next step is doing the front and rear seal and maybe doing the water pump gasket? Should I touch that if there are no leaks?

if the water pump isn't leaking i wouldn't bother personally, it's easy enough to do with the engine in place later. maybe the thermostat though if it's old but same as water pump

Yeah he does seem to make good products for this engine. I wonder what the science behind these are.

I have the oil cooler back in, thermostat gasket, valve stems all done and when I get the right size feeler gauge tomorrow I should be throwing on the new HG and putting the heads back of all goes well and new gaskets on the intake manifolds, slowly getting there.

Any tips for redoing the oil pan gasket? Planning on doing this in the next few days.

I put a bead of silicone on both sides of the gasket and fully let it cure. I put the bead on the block, slap the gasket up, then bead the pan and put the pan up. Overkill? Probably. Guess how many leak...

Don't put an oil pan gasket on. It will leak. The factory didn't use one. The best bet is to use only RTV. Just because they're made, doesn't mean that you have to use one.

With the engine out of the truck, and both surfaces clean and dry, ultra grey 100% of the time.

With the engine still in the truck, I will use the gasket, and with silicone in the right places wont leak.

Some are saying RTV black and you're saying gray. Is there a big difference between the two? Thanks.
